The design of the H&R Rifles and Shotguns manufactured since the late 1960s is more beholden to the Remington 1871 Rolling Block Rifle, the principal reason that this fine reorganized gun manufacturer renamed itself H&R 1871. This one is stamped, New England Firearms, and its NW serial number prefix dates its manufacture to 2005, just before the reorganization. It comes to us from its exclusive civilian West Tennessee owner. While these are not up to cowboy action specs in formal settings, they are excellent rifles and have always been favorites of deer woods hunters here in the hills of West Tennessee and Northeast Mississippi, often known simply as Tennessippi. Caliber is .45-70 Government, break-open single shot with breech lever beside the serrated hammer; barrel is 18 3/4 inch Heavy Barrel, .905 outside diameter at the muzzle, and the muzzle is recessed. Rate of twist is 1:14 right hand. Finish is matte blue steel, both barrel and receiver with purple-tinted hardened steel .300 serrated spur hammer and .300 smooth face trigger. Buttstock and forend are graphite based black polymer, and blue steel sling swivel studs come already installed. Front sight is modified partridge blade mounted on a serrated ramp, Williams manufacture; the rear sight has been removed to make way for the Weaver L516 one piece base. Scope is a Simmons number 800519, 3x9 variable with 50mm Objective lens, 1/4 minute click adjustments and Duplex type crosshairs. Mount rings are Weaver Quad Lock alloy body with steel bolts and screws. Overall length is a compact 34 1/8 inches; and length of pull measures 14 1/8 inches from the face of the trigger to the back of the 1 inch factory recoil pad. Gross Vehicle Weight empty is a well balanced 7 pounds 11 ounces, with center of gravity at the barrel pivot pin. Sling is 1 inch nylon camo adjustable, secured by double brass Chicago screws and blue steel Michaels super swivels. Surface detractions on this rifle are minimal to moderate, principally light contact streaks on the receiver sides and case contact edge wear on the scope itself. We rate the scope as Very Good, but the rifle itself is excellent in our estimation, 90 percent vicinity. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Scope lens coatings are fully intact with no scours or abrasions on their surfaces. This rifle was fired fewer than 100 times.
