Description: THE HAWKEN RIFLE The Hawken rifle is generally shorter and of a larger caliber than earlier Kentucky Rifles. It was popular in the mid-nineteenth century. The term "Hawken rifle" technically referred to rifles made by Jacob and Samuel Hawken of St Louis, Missouri but was often used generically to refer to a variety of "plains rifles" of the period. The earliest known record of a Hawken rifle dates to 1823 when one was made for William H. Ashley, Ashley did several large scale fur trapping expeditions in the mountain west. The Hawkens did not mass-produce their rifles, they were hand made one at a time. Famous men said to have owned a Hawken rifle include: Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Joseph Meek, and Theodore Roosevelt. Thompson Center Hawken A TOP QUALITY, AMERICAN MADE MUZZLELOADING RIFLE Top Percussion / Bottom Flintlock Undoubtedly the most copied rifle in the history of firearms, the T/C Hawken™ was designed for the American shooter. This is a top quality firearm—every bit as fine as the one your great, great granddaddy carried across his saddle pommel or packed along on the wagon train. It captures the romance of the original but it is manufactured to standards of quality control that were unheard of in the early 1800’s. T/C’s famous Hawken™ Rifle is complemented by solid brass hardware. The butt plate, trigger guard and contoured patch box have been meticulously inletted and fitted to the American Walnut stock. This Thompson Center's Hawken Rifle was assembled from a kit. The factory 1" octagon barrel has adjustable rear hunting sight and a fixed forward sight.

The Thompson Center .54 caliber barrel has a 1 in 48" twist, to shoot either round ball or T/C style Maxi ball. The barrel measures 28" in length with a straight 1" octagon barrel. The blue shows several small pits which are hardly noticeable at all just forward of the rear sight. Thompson Center Hawken .54 caliber percussion rifle. I guess if any one company is responsible for the current interest in muzzleloading rifles it would be Thompson Center Arms Company as they were the first American company to offer a heavily advertised, well built quality replica muzzleloading rifle. The Hawken model was the first offering by Thompson Center and is still listed in their current catalog. This rifle is in very good condition with a bright bore with sharp rifling. The stock is Walnut with only the slightest evidence of handling. The bluing on the barrel is very good as well, with 1 small speckled area located under the front sight. Positive feedback is always appreciated. Terms and conditions of the payment of items won on auction: Cashiers Checks and Postal Money Orders.
