LG72352 In the 1970s and 1980s, we griped about guns stamped, Made in Japan. Now they are highly collectable. Same thing in the 1980s and 1990s, with, Made in China written on their receivers. Now most of those, too, are collectable. For two decades now, we have only paid scant attention to Turkish Gunmakers. Here is one of their products that gets our attention, the H&R 1871 Imported Excell Autoloader, manufactured in Duzce, Turkey, by premiere Turkish Armsmaker Sarsilmaz, a company with a century and a half of experience and corporate input from Bernardelli of Italy. This shotgun shows significant influence from Italian Armsmakers Franchi, Benelli, and Beretta. Type is adjustable ports gas operated semi-automatic for the best combination of quick action and diminished felt recoil. Construction is bright blue finished steel barrel and internal parts anchored to a lightweight black matte anodized receiver with a matching high impact polymer trigger group housing. Forend and buttstock are satin finished, cut-checkered Turkish Walnut, 14 inch length of pull including a 1 inch magnum grade rubber recoil pad. Stock is canted for right hand shooters, but capable of accepting Benelli style shims for can. Drop is 1 1/2 inches at the comb; and 2 3/8 at the heel. Overall length is 48 1/2 inches. Chambering is for 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch shells interchangeably, capable for lead, steel, and bismuth shot, not to mention slugs and buckshot. Magazine is chrome plated steel, with 4 + 1 capacity on 2 3/4 inch shells; and 3 + 1 Capacity on 3 inch shells. Tube threads are the same as most Italian manufacturers. Barrel has an eight post, .272 wide serrated ventinalted rib with brass bead, and this shotgun comes with a total of four choke tubes: Improved Cylinder (steel shot ok), Modified (steel ok), Improved Modified (no steel shot), and Full (no steel). Weight empty is a well balanced 7 pounds with centre of gravity under the bolt face / rear of chamber. H&R's Excell Auto 5 shotgun, writes the Massachusetts Importer, represents the super value of an imported shotgun built to specifications and quality standards. It has the full backing of an H&R warranty and features ventilated recoil pads and vent rib barrels on all models except those with slug barrels [edited for grammar]. Factory and Importer marking on this shotgun’s metal surfaces represents some progress from the first Turkish shotguns that hit port a few years ago. Finish, like the lettering, is smooth and attractive throughout, as the photos show. This is a very well executed, slick made shotgun. Other Firearms Industry operatives, notably Smith & Wesson and Weatherby, have not hesitated to put their names on its siblings. Replacement pricing on similar shotguns, not as well finished as this one, ranges upwards of $800 per unit.
