Bid: Time Left: (Auction Ended) Shipping: Calculated on checkout Accepted Payment Methods: Returns: 3 Days Description: This is an American percussion Schuetzen 54 Caliber rifle, with a 30 1/4" heavy octagon barrel and a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of frosting within the groves near the muzzle. This is an attractive double set trigger equipped rifle whose drum and nipple percussion barrel has a smooth brown patina and turned down muzzle for a no longer present bullet starter. There are four sight dovetails along its length: two at the muzzle (one empty original and a newer one now filled by what looks like lead or pewter); one midway down with a steel filler that has a matching brown patina; and a single lead-filed dovetail at the breech which is flanked by two small grooves with uncentered drilled and tapped holes through them. The original peep sight with wide disk aperture is included, however. The hammer and Joseph Golcher marked lock are decorated with light floral scroll and ducks in flight with mild surface flecking on the otherwise bright gray metal. The stock has an added varnish finish with checkering at the wrist, unobtrusive cheeckpiece, an elaborate Shuetzen style triggerguard and engraved brass patchbox, hooked steel butt, "bowtie" shaped wedge escutcheons, and a pewter forearm tip. There are a few minor handling marks and a single repaired crack through the wrist that runs from the back of the lockplate around the wrist to a spot just ahead of the triggers. A brass-tipped wooden ramrod is included. This is a very nice antique rifle in good overall condition, sure to draw attention over a mantel.
