Description:

Six consecutive SS# Colt Pony Express Commemorative pistols all new in the presentation boxes with extras, 22 cal. These guns were a limited edition of 1000 guns to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Pony Express in 1960.

The Pony Express started in my hometown, St. Joseph Missouri, and local Cowboy Hero Tex Cashman was selected to ride the first leg of the reenactment cross county trip to Sacramento California. Tex was a friend of my father, Harold Hatfield, and along with his horse “Judy” was a well-known celebrity. Tex and Judy always lead the hometown parades and performed at many public events. I remember as a little boy watching Tex put Judy through her paces as they performed their well-polished act. The high light of the performance, that always delighted us young kids, was Judy drinking a bottle of Coca Cola out of Tex’s hand (see photos). After the reenactment of the first Pony Express ride all the official participating riders were offered the opportunity to buy one or more of these collectable pistols. There were only 1000 of them made and were SS# 1 thru 500 East and 1 thru 500 West. Most were sold in sets of two with the same SS# (one east and one west). Tex had fallen on hard times and although he wanted one of the guns in the worse way he just didn’t have the money so he asked my father for help. My dad was the only Colt dealer in St. Joseph so he called and told them that St. Joseph was where the Pony Express began and Tex Cashman was the first Pony Express Rider for the 100 year centennial and certainly deserved the opportunity to buy a pair of the pistols. They told him most of the guns were spoken for but considering Tex was rider #1 they would see what they could do. Dad also told them he would like to buy a pair for his two sons, myself and my brother Ted, to keep as family heirlooms. They came through with six guns all consecutive SS#’s 437 east and west, 438 e&w and 439 e&w. Out of friendship my father gave one set to Tex and put the other two sets away for my brother and myself. When Tex passed away he left his set to my dad and when my father died he left Tex’s set to my brother and I. We are both now in our 60’s, have no heirs, so have decided to pass along this unique set of guns to a collector who can appreciate their historical significance. These guns are new (never been out of the wrappers) with the exception of 437 W, which was unwrapped but never fired. It would be impossible in today’s market to assemble a set like this therefore this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.

p> Also included with this collection is the Bible presented to Tex for the ride and is embossed as rider #1. Inside the cover of the Bible is a first day canceled US postal envelope presented to Tex as well as several other mementos of the event including Tex’s Masonic apron (see photos). Tex also left my dad his life long collection of performance photos featuring Tex, Judy and the events he participated in (see photos). Also included is a large pile of correspondence (see photos) to my father about the purchase of these guns and their limited production. There are also several invoices addressed to my father listing the SS# of the guns along with the date of purchase. My dad even saved the money order stubs he used as payment.

I do not know if Tex has been inducted into the Cowboy hall of fame but if he hasn’t been he is surely deserving of the honor.
