Baikal - Russian Model MU 21-12 semi-auto shotgun (serial number 88120) with blue metal finish and fancily carved and skipline checkered oil finish walnut stock. Both the wood and metal display very finely done silver wire inlay work as well. Full pistol grip buttstock has well done 2-panel checkering, an incised carved scene of a running deer in forest, and yes, great C-scroll wire inlay work on the bottom of the pistol grip, around the bottom of the cheekpiece, between the toe of the recoil pad and rear sling swivel, forward of the carving scene and on both sides of the wrist adjacent to the receiver. The forend has finger grooves and wire inlay extending off of each corner of the checkering pattern. LOP measures 14 3/8-inches over factory pad. The pad is thick black rubber with "Baikal" in script. The left side of the receiver has simple but nicely done engraved scene of stag chasing a doe bracketed by silver wire inlay. The right side displays a bull moose chasing a cow bracketed by wire. The receiver also has floral scroll engraving on both sides (total coverage 50%). Barrel is blue finish and measures 29 1/2-inches. Fixed choke. Bore rates very good. Forcing cone is not lengthened. A raised vent rib with step just forward of the 2 3/4-inch chamber. The elevated rib surface has machine cut pattern and Tru-glow type orange front sight. The non-elevated part of the rib has interesting Russian markings including model stamp and Russian symbols/proofs etc. An interesting mechanical feature on this rather appealing shotgun includes a swing style safety which can be switched out left or right. The condition on this gun is about 95% overall. Mechanically sound. The blueing on the barrel shows light wear at muzzle and a few very light scattered scratches. The blue on the receiver is excellent and shows only a few faint scratches, mostly on the top which is unembellished. The receiver body is an interesting two-piece construction and the top section has slid forward just a hair creating a very small gap between the two sections. This doesn't effect the guns performance but perhaps should be corrected by a competent gunsmith. The buttstock shows only a few handling marks mostly along the bottom. There is small stress chip (1/4-inch) on the lower part of the wrist adjacent to the receiver just above the rear of the trigger guard. The stock was taken off the receiver at some point and now there is a very small gap between the wood and metal (easily fixed by thoroughly tightening the thru-bolt). The checkering on the wrist is exellent and the checkering on the forend is very good with a couple of very light depressions on the left - front section. Collectible very hard to find non-import Russian-Baikal. Baikal is the name of a beautiful lake in Siberia and was one of the key holding companies from the former Soviet Union, specializing in the mfg. of firearms and other products. Founded in 1942. After WWII the company began the mfg. of sporting guns. Today there is a gunsmith school at the factory area for making attractive one-of-a kind guns. Perhaps this beauty is a product of one of Russia's fine custom gunsmiths.
