Although Smith & Wesson's M&P Shield .40 is basically a modern striker fired, recoil operated, semi auto, this pistol feels to the user much like a revolver with a short, crisp (spec'd at 6.5 lbs), short-reset DAO (double action only) pull that is consistent from the first to the last shot. What this arrangement means is that the trigger works the same way, first time, every time, an outstanding combat feature. The subcompact, less than 1”-wide frame is zytel polymer with undercut trigger guard to enable a stable, high hold. A small tactical rail is molded into the dust cover. The frame is topped with a stainless steel slide, coated with a highly resistant matte black Melonite® finish. Besides the trigger, the only other controls on the pistol are unobtrusive take down, and mag release, slide catch and manual safety levers all on the left side to keep the maintain the thin profile. The grips have an aggressive, non-slip texture on the front- and back straps, and the grip angle is set at the optimal 18 degrees deemed by many professionals to provide the best natural point of aim. The fixed 3-dot combat sight system consists of a rear low-mount carry unit, dovetailed into the slide, and a steel blade front, also dovetailed into the slide. This gun comes with 2 drop-free S&W magazines, one 7-rd unit with an extended, finger-rest floor plate for better control on the range, and one 6-rd unit with a flat floor plate for more concealable carry.
