What makes the Military & Police series unique is that Smith & Wesson engineers set out to build a pistol specifically designed to fit the human hand. The Smith & Wesson M&P uses a system of three interchangeable backstraps to accommodate a wide array of different hand sizes and plam swells. Small, medium & large are provided. Substituting backstraps is accomplished by twisting a release lever located at the bottom of the frame. No tools or gunsmithing are required. Another user friendly feature of the M&P is its easy disassembly system. Field striping, cleaning and routine maintenance are achieved by locking the slide rearward, and then rotating the takedown lever. This disconnects the sear and allows the slide to effortlessly be removed from the frame. To ensure maximum safety, the disassembly system forces the operator to retract the slide, thereby guaranteeing an unloaded chamber before releasing the striker. The Smith & Wesson M&P uses a short-stroke, double action only, striker pull trigger. Like most polymer frame pistols, the M&P incorporates a picatinny accessory rail for flashlights or lasers. The M&P has a sleek, contoured, scalloped slide that provides secure loading or unloading. The barrel and slide are made of stainless steel that's coated with a durable black melonite finish. The Smith & Wesson M&P frame contains a set of forward and rear steel blocks that house the fire control mechanism. These serve as the guides upon which the slide reciprocates. Considering the Smith & Wesson M&P slide only contacts the frame at four points, instead of full-length contact like most other designs, it makes for a very reliable, self-cleaning style rail system that leaves plenty of room to eject dirt, grit, or sand out of the action. This pistol has a 4.25" barrel, weighs in at a little over 24- ounces and has a DAO trigger pull of roughly 6.5 pounds. The two full capacity 17- round magazines provided are made of genuine steel. A set of Novak Lo-mount Carry white outline sights sit on top of the slide, are highly visible, easy to use and track reasonably well. Finally, Smith & Wesson uses a captive recoil spring system on the M&P that contains a stainless steel guide rod.
