This is a very interesting and rare antique gun. It was returned to the U.S. from Africa within the last several years. A number of the guns ordered with multiple leaf express sights went to Africa, as they were commonly used on many game guns. As important, they were also common on guns used to fight the African native tribes, and called "volley sights", for long range shooting (400 to 500 yards). This one has several other special features, all listed in the Winchester Museum letter for this gun. It includes "Serial number: 511xxx, Date into the warehouse: 7-29-1898, Type: rifle; Caliber: 44; Barrel: Octagon; Trigger: Set; Sights: 7 leaf rear & Beech; Sling Swivels; Date shipped from the warehouse: 8-6-1898; Order: 95". There is virtually no original finish on the metal. I can see a trace of case color on the hammer, and I would guess the receiver, fore end cap, lever and butt plate were originally case colored. The receiver and side plates are stained or mottled, but relatively free of rust or pitting. The metal has been cleaned and smoothed over years of use, but was obviously not abused. The stocks are in good shape, with no varnish and sort of a gun oil finish. There is a cleaning rod in the butt stock (4 piece), and there is also a very light duty, carved leather sling, with old style sling hooks. Bore is perfect. Both the Winchester Museum letter and a letter with some provenance will be available with the gun. The previous owner purchased the gun from a family in the area of Ermelo, South Africa (southeast of Johannesburg), where it had been since the very late 1800's. By all means call or email questions. I'd be happy to talk with you about it.
Trades are possible - Colt Single Actions and lever Winchesters preferred, but will consider some others. Will also consider trade for U.S. gold and silver coins at spot value, and partial trade for other Winchesters and/or Colts. This gun may be purchased with either VISA or MasterCard, for an additional 4% fee.
