Ideal Grade .410 with Hunter One Trigger- RARE- 98% CASE COLOR
How nice it is to find a low production L.C. Smith .410 with high factory original condition! This little beauty has most all of its bold, vivid case colors, factory wood finish, and blue, with no restoration work of any kind. One of only 232 ever made, only 99 with the Hunter One Trigger, it is truly a collector/investor grade Classic American Double. It has been shot, as there is wear on the blue around the forend that is so often seen the L.C. Smith, so it is a shooter as well. As most experienced double gun shooter/collectors know, the small bores, especially the .410’s, are the most sought after of all the vintage doubles. There were so few made and to find the near mint guns is to find the most desirable. There cannot be more than a handful of Ideal Grade .410’s on earth as nice as this one.
The 26” barrels are choked LM/F (.010/.018), with 3” chambers, extractors, 85% original blue, a few handling scratches just forward of the forend, tight ribs and barrels that ring, no dents or dings, clear sharp lettering. The barrel blue on the later L.C. Smiths always seemed to wear in the areas that were handled, more so than the other Classic American Doubles. Fortunately, the case color on the Elsies seemed to endure in much better fashion than the other makers of the same vintage. The barrels fit tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun.
The receiver is fabulous, retaining truly 98% bold, vivid case color all the way to the hinge pin, excellent screws, single selective trigger that functions flawlessly, clear, sharp engraving, engraved trigger guard with 70% original niter blue, action tight with lever way right of center. Case color is what drives the value of the collectible vintage doubles, and this one is outstanding. It is not likely you will see better anywhere.
The wood is typical Ideal grade walnut, with some figure, about 90% of the original factory finish remaining, several light handling marks, no cracks or repairs, excellent factory checkering, wood to metal fit is excellent. The gun has a Pachmayr Whiteline Pad on it, which I had always assumed was a replacement pad on a vintage American Double. However, I have documented that Elsies from the Marlin period, beginning in 1946, were regularly shipped with the Whiteline pad. It was the standard pad offered after Marlin took over. The LOP from the REAR TRIGGER POSITION is 12 ¾”, which translates to a 13 ¾” LOP if it were a 2 trigger gun. The pad appears to be factory original. Drop at heel is 2 ½”, drop at comb 1 3/8” for good shooting dimensions. I am 5’ 10” and I shoulder the gun just fine as is. For those long armed guys the Galco slip on would be the answer.
This 1947 vintage Elsie was shipped in 1947 and I have obtained the factory shipping info from the Cody Firearms Museum. All is exactly per the letter. Weighing 6lbs. 3 oz. it is a very nice swinging gun and one that is sure to appreciate in value. I have only seen one nicer, and I sold that a year ago for $14,950. I bought this one right, so I am offering it up at a bargain price. I have many more photos upon request. Thirty day mechanical warranty included. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER FINE VINTAGE FIREARMS ON THIS WEBSITE. Thanks for looking.
