Description:
Ithaca Grade 4 NID 16 Gauge SxS Shotgun
RARE, ENGLISH STOCK, BEAVERTAIL
General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1927, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 6oz, Side by Side
Serial Number: 448937
What a great little Ithaca 16ga. According to Walt Snyder’s book, “The Ithaca Gun Company- From the Beginning”, there were only 560 Grade 4 NID guns made in all gauges, 24 of them .410 and 28ga. guns, leaving 536 to account for 12ga., 16ga., and 20ga. guns. At least 1/2 of the remainder were 12ga. guns, leaving 268 guns in 16 and 20 gauge. The NID series began in the mid 1920’s and ran through 1949. The 20ga. guns became far more popular than the 16ga. guns by the 30’s and 40’s. MY EDUCATED GUESS PUTS THE ITHACA NID GRADE 4 16GA. PRODUCTION AT UNDER 100 GUNS. That is rare indeed! Now realize that less than 10% of the Ithaca guns had straight stocks and you have one of about 10 ever made. The beavertail and checkered butt are extras as well. This gun, serial number 448937 built in 1927, remains in excellent condition and came from the estate of John Houchins, the author of the seminal book on L.C. Smith guns "L.C. Smith The Legend Lives". Balanced perfectly on the hinge pin and weighing just 6lbs. 6oz. this is a delightful gun in hand for upland carry or clay targets. The wood has marvelous figure, no cracks or repairs, nice modern dimensions, excellent wood to metal fit, and the mechanics are excellent with clean screws, mirror bores, crisp triggers, all in great working order. The double ivory beads add a nice touch of class. Ready for the upcoming season, with lots of desirable features including rarity, this is a shooter/collector's investment quality shotgun.
