EMAIL REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL PHOTOS. Very nice 1873 Winchester 1st Model Rifle - Winchester Co. and Cody Firearms Museum lettered, mfg'd in 1876, .44-40 caliber, 24" octagon barrel, and set-trigger. A frontier work piece that was obviously cared for and cherished by its owner. Very Good+ condition. Smooth metal having turned the mottled grayish brown color with blue remaining in protected areas. General handling and wear pattern marks, but no gouges or pitting. Dust cover stays in the back-mode position after the action is worked. All screws are present, original, and in very nice condition. Tube spring and follower, and all other internal parts are there and in very good order. Very good mechanical working condition throughout; action is nice and tight. However, set-trigger not working, but it's an easy fix for a gunsmith. The original adjustment screw is present. Hardly any stock shrinkage. Wood has normal handling marks, but no cracks, repairs, or gouges. The remaining finish is original and untouched. The left side of stock has an interesting pattern of small brass tacks or brads nailed into the stock in a straight line. This is NOT a repair, but was likely put there as a count of some sort or a form of quick identification by the owner - possibly suggesting that it might have been kept in a common access area such as a ranch bunk house or line house. Butt trap is in good working order. Original cleaning rod and head are present and included. Bore is slightly frosted, but has very strong lands and groves from the chamber to the muzzle - appearing to have some leading streaks in areas. The bore should clean up very nicely. Bore is very servicable as presented, although I do not recommend shooting any antique arm. A very nice frontier, early Winchester rifle that was there during the old west heyday - very shortly after Custer's demise, before the demise of Jessie James and Billy the Kid, and a couple of years before Tombstone even existed; the condition having just the right amount of Old West flavor - not some hot house rose that was put away; having a special order factory set trigger; original cleaning rod and head included; lettered; and very reasonably priced.
