The serial number is 13317 and was made and shipped in 1886. The rifle partially letters with "The Cody Firearms Museum" (see letter of e-mail) and appears all original. It has an 22 inch Octagonal Barrel with full magazine. The rifle is the specified 38-55 and comes with the “checkered pistol grip stock” special order feature described in the report. The report fails to indicate the lightweight frame that it is clearly is or the fact the barrel is 22 inches instead of the reported 28 inches. These reports have a history of portions being incomplete or inaccurate. This example is Mounted with nicely figured checkered American walnut with checkered serpentine pistol grip stock where the real beauty is hidden under the 130+ years of aging finish. A high percentage of the original blue finish on the barrel and the receiver remains but aging has dulled the finish . The magazine tube, lever, hammer, and buttplate are beginning to turn to a brown patina. The wood to metal fit is excellent all the way around. You will find the usual wear on the wood and the metal, but not much. The action is smooth and tight and functions perfectly. As you probably know the model 1881 is Marlin’s first lever action. It is estimated that slightly over 20,000 were produced. The buttstock has a few bruises on the left side near the wrist as seen in the photos but does not have any splits, repairs or cracks. As seen in the photos of the right side of the forearm there is a fine crackline and an old repair often typical in the model but surprising is very tight and solid. The stocks are good to very good with normal wear, small chips and losses, and scratches. The varnish finish is significantly worn. The checkering on the pistol grip is significantly worn down as seen in the photos. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The action functions perfectly. 13 3/8" LOP over a crescent steel butt plate. This would be a great addition to any Marlin collection.
