Springfield 1903 30.06 EARLY Ser # 6315
Springfield Armory - extremely early production, lowest serial number we've seen.
Receiver is from first or second month of production in 1903
(originally caliber 30.03, conversions to 30.06 began in '06)
24" Barrel, produced in Jan '07
Bolt body is contemporary to receiver, with Small-Hole gas ports
Bolt head is later, around WWII
Cut-off switch is contemporary to receiver
Follower is 03 tho' of unknown date
Rear sight assembly is '06
Checkered butt-plate is of indeterminate age but pre-WWII
Bottom metal (incl. Floor plate assembly, Trigger guard, Floor plate) probably between WWI & II
Bottom wood (stock) is 03-A3
Top wood (hand guard) is 03 but again between Wars I & II
These guns were originally built as "Rod Bayonet" but the replacement stock doesn't allow that.
Condition overall is fair to good for its age, and the interior of the bbl is good.
NOTE
Officially this gun is being sold as a parts gun.
BUYER assumes all responsibility if s/he shoots it.
These early guns were "single heat treated" with temperatures determined by the color of the metal,
and the eye could be fooled under different lighting conditions,
so a small number of them were insufficiently hardened
and could and DID blow up, particularly if 8mm rds were used.
Read Hatcher --not just about him, but read his actual words.
Read Brophy --and not just the chapters but the parts discussions in back.
