Similarities to the Walther P22 are easy to spot on this first specimen of Sturm Ruger’s new SR22 pistol. Ruger’s factory blurb does not mention its competitor. The Ruger SR22 pistol, the factory writes, is the do-it-all .22 pistol for the shooter who appreciates style and demands reliability. Packed with versatile features, the SR22 pistol is lightweight (just 17.5 ounces) and perfect for just about anything - plinking, target shooting and even small game hunting. It
is easy to field-strip, fun to shoot, and will reliably accept a variety of ammunition, not just high-velocity. Manufacturer, of course, is Sturm Ruger & Co of Prescott, AZ. Construction is alloy slide assembly on a steel reinforced two piece polymer frame. Barrel is a solid piece of stainless steel, .479 diameter at the muzzle and with a massive anchor area at the chamber. Action is blowback semi automatic with external steel hammer and blued steel .350 smooth face combat type trigger. On the photo specimen, double action trigger pull was smooth and consistent, and single action measured at 4 pounds with moderate felt creep and three distinct stages according to our photographer. Safety is fully ambidextrous decocker, and the SR22 has a magazine safety; that is, it will not fire with the magazine removed. It is not capable of cocked and locked carry; first shot will be double action with a cocked hammer on subsequent shots until the operator engages the safety / decocker. Sights are three dot configuration, dovetailed into the slide fore and aft, with windage and elevation adjustable low profile rear sight. Each pistol comes with a total of two factory magazines whose capacity is 10 rounds of .22 Long Rifle caliber ammunition. Note the thumb tab on the left side of each mag, for ease of loading; and the extra replacement finger rest floor plates furnished with each magazine. Each SR22 also comes with two different grip frame covers, one with an arched back strap and one with a more subdued curve to it for smaller grip circumference. The SR22 is capable of cycling standard velocity .22 Long Rifle ammunition, says the factory. Weight empty is 17.5 ounces; overall length is 6 13/16 from the muzzle to the back of the slide, or 6 1/2 inches to the back of the commander type skeleton hammer. Height is 4 3/4 inches from the magazine floorplate to the top of the rear sight; 5 1/2 inch sight radius; .950 slide thickness at the port; .975 frame thickness above the trigger; 1.28 between the tops of the safety levers. If this pistol turns out to be as reliable and as garbage mouthed as its larger peers, it will be a formidable force in the handgun market.
