Description: Walther TPH .22LR serial #283917. Please don't mistake this gem specimen TPH for the US made clones. This TPH is from my personal collection and is the exceedingly scarce and collectible West German made version. The West German made TPH is rare and expensive due to the passage of the 1968 Gun Control Act ( GCA ) which prohibited pistols with short barrels being imported into the US. The Walther TPH pistol fell within this prohibited class of firearms and was thus permanently banned from commercial importation into the US.

Since Walther did not start manufacturing the TPH pistol until early 1968, Interarms ( who were at that time the sole US commercial importer of Walthers ) only had about six months in which to legally import a very limited number of German made TPHs into the US prior to the date the GCA became law -- October 22, 1968. Since that time, few additional TPHs have been legally imported into the US ( on an ATF Form 6 ) -- typically by either returning US servicemen or German immigrants.

Because Walther originally intended the TPH to serve as a "back-up" weapon for law enforcement officers, no expense was spared in developing and manufacturing the pistol. Unlike most of the US made clones, German TPHs reliably perform. However, due to their high value, these days few TPHs are actually carried with the vast majority residing safely in the vaults of knowledgeable investors. Because of their renown German over-engineered quality and federally mandated scarcity, the TPH continues to appreciate.

This TPH has a highly polished deep blue finish on its steel slide and alloy frame, fixed contrast sights, pristine checkered black synthetic grips and includes; three ( 3 ) new authentic German made blue finger-extension .22LR magazines ( the two extra mags cost $89 each, are no longer manufactured by Walther and are becoming very hard to find under $100 ), original TPH owners manual, original black plastic cleaning rod and the original factory brown "wood-grain" style box with an intact model/serial number end-label.

Also included is an additional new German made standard TPH .22LR barrel ( cost was $125 ). The extra barrel was purchased because I had planned to suppress the pistol and wanted to be able to later return it to factory specifications. However, I changed plans so the pistol was never modified ( i.e. barrel threaded ) in any manner. However, should someone desire a suppressed TPH -- this is a turn-key set-up that would be difficult to duplicate.

In terms of provenance, on the right side of the slide are stamped the words "Interarms * Alexandria" followed by the serial #283917. Underneath the serial number, in very small letters, is stamped "MADE IN GERMANY". The left side of the slide is stamped "Carl Walther Waffenfabrik Ulm/De". Stamped underneath that is the Walther banner followed by the words "Modell TPH Cal .22 l.r.". The pistol's serial number is also stamped on the right side of the frame, along the forward edge of the right grip panel near the base of the trigger guard.

This TPH has about a 1/16" area of almost imperceptible wear along the high edge of the left corner of the frame just above the magazine release. Some sellers would claim this pistol was brand new. I do not believe that it has been fired since leaving the factory. Since I'm not the original owner, all I can say with certainty is that it appears to be in new condition with a gleaming, mirror bright bore, no perceptible primer marks around the firing pin and near complete absence of visible imperfections.

For those collectors with their C&R authorization, the West German made TPH qualifies as a C&R firearm and can be shipped directly to them.
