From its home in New England comes this attractive and serviceable Stevens model 311 series H double. Manufacturer was Savage Arms of Westfield, Mass., and so marked. From its B997000 serial number, and from a similarly numbered specimen we received new in 1975, it was manufactured in 1975, or 1976 at the latest. Type is box lock side by side double shotgun with extractors. Construction is entirely steel metal except for the safety button and internal forend framework, with American Hardwood Buttstock and Forend. Chambering is 20 gauge shells, lead or bismuth shot only, 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch interchangeably. Barrels are 27 3/4 inch, nominally 28 inch .603 modified right tube and .696 full choke left tube. Mechanism is breech lever loackup. Safety is black anodized alloy serrated tag mounted behind the lever. Buttstock length of pull is 14 1/2 inches from the right trigger face to the end of the butt plate. Drop is the standard 1 1/2 at comb and 2 1/2 inches at the butt, with a 3/4 inch right hand cant. This double is not particularly southpaw friendly, then. Weight empty is 6 pounds 15 ounces, with center of gravity 3 inches forward of the receiver. Overall length is 44 1/2 inches. Note that its buttstock has a professionally repaired, epoxied hairline recoil crack that runs from its center left side next to its receiver, back to the tang. The blemish is visible but not conspicuous. Its forend metal also has a reinforcement screw, visible on the forend, that is not original but not bad. Apart from those two items, Surface detractions are moderate, principally finish freckling and weathering surface wear on the buttstock and forend. We rate this Double as Good, perhaps Very Good, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. From the right handed cant of the breech lever, and absence of any significant brass residue on the breech face, or any bore streaking, we estimate this 311 was actually fired fewer than 200 times. The Stevens 311’s discontinuance in 1988 marked the end of field grade, affordable US Made Doubles. We’re offering it for only $ 359.00.
