M.B.A. Mark I Model B "Rocketeer" Gyrojet Rocket Pistol serial #B5530, 13mm Gyrojet, 5" barrel with an excellent bore. This pistol, really a small handheld personal rocket launcher, was invented by a pair of nuclear scientists; Robert Mainhardt and Arthur Biehl, and represented their attempt to provide a fundamental improvement in firearms technology. The gun itself is of pressed metal construction due to the much lower firing stresses encountered compared to a conventional firearm and has a distinctly "toy gun" feel and weight. The metal retains virtually all of its original black enamel finish with only some scant traces of wear at the butt and has a series of transverse vent openings on the sides of the breech block and "chamber" area of the unrifled barrel. The rearward facing hammer, trigger, magazine follower, safety, and breech lever are brightly finished cast metal and are in excellent condition with the smooth walnut grip panels exhibiting only some very minor handling marks, mostly on the right side. The pistol operates by loading the Gyrojet rounds (each one a small solid-fueled rocket) into the fixed magazine through the opened breech. Upon closing the breechblock the hammer is cocked forward manually and, when the trigger is depressed, impacts the nose of the projectile driving it backwards into a fixed firing pin causing the propellant to ignite. Forward travel of the projectile cocks the hammer for the next shot. The exhaust venturi on the projectiles were angled and imparted a spin to give gyroscopic stability and, while just as loud as a conventional pistol, the report actually occurred several feet ahead of the muzzle as the rocket broke the sound barrier. The benefits of the system: almost nonexistent recoil and the ability to shoot underwater or in vacuum without any modifications; were negated by only fair accuracy and a lack of serious interest by the military and shooting public. In fact the only "government" agency that did adopt the Gyrojet was "Tiger" Tanaka's fictitious Japanese Secret Service ninja attack force in the 1967 James Bond film "You Only Live Twice". This example is in almost new condition and comes complete with its original cardboard box and an August 1966 copy of “TRUE” magazine which has an interesting article on the Gyrojet and its inventors.
