Baltimore Arms A Grade 12ga. – HIGH FACTORY CONDITION, ENGLISH STOCK
The Baltimore Arms Co. was short-lived, spanning 1896 to 1904. They produced a small number of high grade guns, like the Trap Grade I had for sale. Ansley H. Fox was involved in the formation of the company and the guns were built partly on his patents. The famous gunmaker Frank Hollenbeck was responsible for the patents on the cross bolt fastener and the rib extension. This is American double gun history at its finest, and this A Grade, sn6410 built around 1900, is in incredible factory original condition with over 90% vivid case color, 98% barrel blue and wood finish, and very rare English style grip. Additionally, it has very nice dimensions uncharacteristic of the era. It is my opinion that any Fox collector simply must have a Baltimore Arms Co. gun highlighting Ansley Fox’s entry into the gun market. In addition, any serious collector of American double shotguns should have an example of Frank Hollenbeck’s work. This gun covers both, and with the condition, rarity, and shootability, it serves as a grand investment vessel as well. This gun will certainly continue to grow in value as time moves on.
The 30” nitro steel barrels retain 98% blue, mirror bores, choked F/F (.032/.033, can be opened to your specs for $65 per barrel), bore diameter of .725/.725, minimum wall thickness of 44 thou right, 43 thou left, no pits, dents, or scratches, 2 ½” chambers (chambers and forcing cones can be lengthened for $140 to reduce recoil and possibly improve patterns, but is not required in order to shoot 2 ¾” shells; if you don’t know why, ask), extractors, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin, ribs tight.
The action has the classic Hollenbeck trademark breech balls, gracefully filed to a ridge, 90% factory case color, near perfect screws, action tight with lever far right of center, double triggers with excellent pulls, 90% trigger guard blue, rebated frame top and bottom (prevents stock splits), very positive auto safety, really a well designed shotgun.
The English gripped butt stock and splinter forend have excellent factory borderless checkering and finish, ebony forend tip, no cracks or repairs, 14” LOP to factory butt plate, 13 5/8” LOP to end of wood, 2 ½” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb, neutral cast (can be altered to your specs by bending and/or the addition of a Silvers pad within 10 days of purchase), really amazing for 110 years of age.
This is a low production, super nice factory original gun that just screams to be shot and cared for. At 7lbs. 13oz. it has the weight and balance to make a fine sporting clays gun, with weight forward balance that will help you keep those barrels swinging. It is equally adept at rolling over the big tom turkeys, long flushing pheasants, and those high flying waterfowl. This is an affordable investment quality shotgun with enough history and condition to be of great interest sans engraving and fancy wood. Really a keeper gun for under $3000.
There are more photos upon request. There is a 30 day mechanical warranty on this gun.
