From its V502000 range serial number, we estimate that this Smith & Wesson Victory Model Revolver was manufactured in 1943. The series began with V1 in 1942, and run until V800000 range by 1945. This Victory appears original throughout, except with the possible replacement of its ejector rod, since the finish is parkerized except for that one part. What is even more distinctive than its military marking is its law enforcement marking. Digits ISP.30 grace the left side of the frame beneath the thumb latch. Illinois State Police, number 30. This old .38 Special, then, not only served its country during World War II, but also served the citizens of Illinois with their State Police after the war. Cylinder serial number matches the number on the butt. Surface detractions are extensive, but the surfaces are quite smooth. Barrel’s exterior surfaces show perhaps 20 percent etchy marking, with what may be cold blue residue on the under side forward of the lug. Remainder is a mix of brown patina and parkerized, as the photos show. Grips and lanyard are period correct military issue. We rate this Victory Model as Good, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is Very Good mechanically, excellent if one ignores the single position where a person can vveeerrryyy ssloo cock it and the hammer will fall before the cylinder locks into place. All the other five positions have 5 to 15 degrees of hammer travel after the cylinder times. On a normal firing or cocking motion, both single and double action, all six time correctly. Bore and cylinder chambers are all bright, clean, and excellent. Victory Models have consistently held their value and appreciated for many years. This one is doubly collectable for its dual careers.
