WE HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS GUN, AND ACCORDING TO THE NRA DOPE BAG, THEY BELIEVE IT WAS MADE PRIOR TO 1898. FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND, IT WAS APPARENTLY MADE BY COLLATH FOR E.A. MERKEL, PERHAPS CUSTOM MADE FOR ONE OF MERKEL'S CUSTOMERS, WHICH THE CURRENT OWNERS STATEMENT BELOW SEEMS TO VERIFY. IT HAS DAMASCUS STYLE BARRELS. THE LETTER FROM THE NRA IS PICTURED AND SAYS THAT THEY DATE IT TO ABOUT 1880.
THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT WAS GIVEN TO ME BY THE GUNS' CURRENT OWNER: My great grandfather, Louis C. Arps (1875 – 1964), owned this gun. Something of a Renaissance man, he was the school principal, as well as the owner of a hardware store that specialized in sporting equipment. He was also a notorious hunter, tour guide, tracker, and fisherman, who was most fondly remembered as a philanthropist who gave no-interest loans to many during the Great Depression in the very small town of Tigerton, Wisconsin. Although he was not a wealthy man by most standards, his great obsession was in owning and using the finest hunting and fishing equipment available. This was a lifelong passion that had been passed on from his father. I grew up staring at this gun in the cabinet and asking questions about it. My older relatives were sure this gun was custom-built to the specifications of my great-great grandfather to be presented as a gift to my great grandfather upon his becoming old enough to hunt. In researching old Merkel’s and finding nothing similar, I am inclined to agree that it is a one-of-a-kind weapon. His initials are engraved on the decorative plate on the gunstock. Unfortunately, I no longer possess any photos of him with the gun or any of the related memorabilia that I so fondly recall.
