Krag 1898 Carbine Springfield Armory Very Good
Serially numbered 1688xx, we believe this is an authentic if modified Springfield Armory Rifle Carbine, chambered in the venerable .30-40 Krag caliber. Its barrel is 22 inches long, and the front sight is slightly later than issue period with the Marble Sight Co. blade. Apart from being an old professional reblued, perhaps Armory reblued, variant, with a block insert in the cleaning rod area of the forend, it is mostly original. The magazine box is a brownish gray patina with very light etchy marking on most of its left side surface, with generous blue or reblued on its right side. A similar situation holds for the receiver surface, except the bluing is very nice and bright. Exposed area of the barrel holds at about 80 percent, blue or reblued, with a row of light contact pecking on the left side of the barrel that is not conspicuous. Rear sight is quite nice, original brown patina; and the front sight base band appears original with the two-stage Marble’s insert, as we noted above. Rifling is clear and clean throughout the bore, and we detect no pitting. Bolt surface is clean as well, with about 30 percent light flattening to the checkering on the cocking knob.
Stock is very nice, with perhaps 30 percent light to moderate pecking and scratching. Forward area of forend has three parallel light cracks that extend forward from the sling swivel for about ¾ inch; these do not extend all the way to the forend tip by any means. The only other crack we detect anywhere is on top of the comb, forward of and deriving from the top butt plate screw, and the crack is not spread and only extends visibly for about ½ inch. Left side of stock behind magazine has a dim Springfield Armory Logo with armorer’s letters H H underneath. This Carbine appears Excellent Mechanically.
This is a very nice, historic old Krag-Jorgensen, quite likely modified on the order of the rare carbine length except for the mild detractions we have observed above. This rifle came from a WWII Veteran / Collector’s estate, and it had been in his possession since the 1950s. We’re offering it for only $ 1380.00
