Rossi has been producing slick, quality copies of John M. Browning’s 1892 Winchester since the 1960s, and we have always sold them. Here is a pristine, blue steel specimen of the Rossi 92 Trapper length carbine in .45 Colt caliber. Note that the magazine band and steel buttplate are also stainless colored. Buttstock and forend are nicely grained Brazilian Hardwood, close to walnut as you can get. The only non-traditional aspect to this rifle is inconspicuous: its bolt mounted firing pin safety. Manufacturer is Amadeo Rossi of Sao Paulo, Brazil; importer and service warrantor is Braztech of Miami. Both are Taurus affiliates. Caliber, of course, is .45 Long Colt; and capacity is 8 + 1. Sights are traditional blue steel post type front with step elevator blue steel rear, as the photos show. Weight empty is a light fast 6 pounds. Length of pull from the center of the trigger to the center of the buttplate is only 12 1/2 inches, so this rifle comes close to a youth length; overall length is only 33 inches including the 20 inch round barrel. Rate of twist is a very slow 1:30. This specimen comes to us from Taurus’s distribution system. It is what we call a factory demo: a sales rep’s sample, perhaps even a Las Vegas showgirl from the annual SHOT show in that notable city. It comes in its factory box with instruction manual and factory registration card. Extra label on top of the box reads, Factory Reconditioned. It carries, writes the label, the Exclusive Braztech Functional Repair Policy, but not on its finish. That means that if it gives mechanical problems, Braztech will fix it, but they will not perform a freebie refinish job. It does not need it anyway. Surface detractions are minimal, principally edge wear that approximates what one sees on brand new rifles on display in stores that have been handled. We rate it as Excellent in box, 90 to 95 percent by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. From its absence of a hammer lock and its AM200000 range serial number, we estimate this Trapper was manufactured in 2011, before Rossi and Taurus had a chance to fully merge and put the Taurus hammer locks in all their long guns.
