Description: According to Supica’s and Nahas’s Standard Catalog, Major Gilbert Stuart’s inspections covered up to serial number 42,000. This one is 632xx, and has the Ordnance Bomb on the left upper frame side and the Eagle insignia with numeral 56 on the lower left side. Barrel top marking is exactly as follows:

Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A. Patented Dec. 17, 1901. Feb. 6, 1906. Sep. 14, 1909.

Frame butt reads U.S. Army Model 1917. Barrel serial number matches the frame’s as does the cylinder’s. This revolver is not a re-import. Grips are not necessarily original to the revolver, but are age-appropriate commercial factory S&W diamond grips. The lanyard ring has been removed. Finish is a nice streaked reblue that we estimate was done at least 25 years ago. Many of the firearms in the United States’ arsenals were reblued and reactivated in early World War II, but we believe this one’s refinish was done after the war. One detraction to this revolver is the condition of the grips, with medium contact scuffing affecting perhaps 30 percent of their surface, mostly on the right panel. The grips are not cracked. Forcing cone and center face of cylinder have had light surface rust which we have sealed and corrected. As the photos show, rifling is strong and there is no conspicuous pitting, but there are some similar effects to previous light rust in the rifling grooves. We have complimented our photographer on the bore shot. He works for food, and got a bonus for this one – upsize from medium to jumbo barbecue sandwich. Screw head stress evidence is negligible to very modest on all 6 exposed screws. Timing is Very Good to Excellent on single action, with about 10 degrees hammer travel after timing; and timing is Very Good on double action: the cylinder times at the break on all 6 positions. The holster is an original G.I. genuine leather left hand holster. Markings are G & K 1917. The holster is in Good condition. It has, as the photos show, considerable surface cracking developing along its front edge, and one 4 inch crack on its outer surface that traverses the U in the insignia marking. Nevertheless, stitching is almost all intact, and the belt loop is not heavily cracked. The holster is still pliable and has, by our estimate, more than half of its original finish remaining. We will offer the holster separately for $129.95 Specimens of the 1917 only rarely surface. This is one of fewer than 10 that we have come upon in the last decade, and the others had re-import stamps. Our Repark 1917 is one we’ve had for close to 20 years. Revolvers like this one often command upwards of $1000 apiece. We’re offering this 1917 Smith & Wesson US Army .45 ACP Double Action, however, complete with its authentic left-hand holster for only $689.95; or buy it without the holster for $599.95
