Model 1868 US Springfield Trapdoor Rifle, caliber .50-70, serial Number 17,278, manufactured in 1874. 32 5/8 inch barrel, excellent bore. Two barrel bands. Cleaning rod not cupped. Long range-type rear sight. Front sight on lug for bayonet. Two-piece trigger guard construction with sling swivel on front of bow. Arch of breechblock measures 1 7/8 inches. Length of front of receiver 2 1/8 inches. L.O.P. 13 5/8 inches. Breechblock marked "1869 / U.S." in two lines with the eagle crossed arrows in between. Lock marked "US / SPRINGFIELD" with the eagle & “1863” Bottom of stock shows an inspector's stamp "ABG" or "ABC" just to the rear of the trigger plate tang. The top of the heel of the butt is marked "US". The barrel is mostly in the white as is the cleaning rod. The barrel bands are turning brown. Stock has the initials “PJ” carved in flat area opposite the lock. The bore is excellent. With the exception of some soldier carving his initials “PJ” in the stock, the gun is in wonderful, original condition. Very nice representative piece. The stock has some superficial scratches and dents, but is in overall excellent original condition. NRA Grade is excellent. No FFL necessary. Thank You For Bidding!
