Outstanding First Year Production Smith & Wesson Model 1917 Double Action Revolver in .45 ACP caliber. World War One production S&W manufactured in 1917 and shipped from the factory on January 25, 1918 to the US Government at the Springfield Armory, Springfield, Massachusetts. Two page factory letter (SEE IMAGES) confirms configuration and shipping date. This revolver has 5 ½ inch barrel, with correct front sight, the wartime S&W blue finish, casehardened hammer and trigger and factory two piece walnut grips. The bottom of the butt frame is marked “U.S./ARMY/MODEL/1917” to the rear of the lanyard loop, and “NO. 17850” ahead of the loop. The barrel underside is marked “UNITED STATES PROPERTY”. Correct “GHS” proof on the upper left side of the frame for Major Gilbert H. Stewart, Government inspector. The serial number is on the underside of the barrel, and the rear face of the cylinder, and all serial numbers match. The initials “D.S.” are scratched into the bottom of the left walnut grip. The butt is fitted with a lanyard loop. Serial Number 17850. Excellent condition at 95%+ for original blue finish with light muzzle wear, scattered handling marks on the barrel and patches of light thinning on the cylinder crane. Hammer and trigger exhibit vibrant original casehardening colors. Grips are excellent. With papers. A wonderful S&W from the first World War.
