L.C. Smith Ideal Grade 16ga.- 30” BARRELS, CONDITION, EJECTORS
Here we have an unusual Ideal Grade. The top tang is of the pre-1910 variety with 2 parts, the trigger guard is pre-1920, and the serial number, FWE220572, exceeds the series that ends in 1917 but is not part of the later series of serial numbers. With the low game-style concave rib, and two part upper tang, I am guessing it is a special order gun made around 1917, with some parts coming from inventory of pre-1913 guns. This is a wonderful Elsie with lots of condition, great dimensions, regular frame, long graceful barrels, EJECTORS, and weighs in at 6 3/4lbs. balancing just forward of the hinge pin. What a great gun for sporting clays or long, open shots on upland game.
The 30” London Steel barrels retain 93% of their original factory blue, great bores with an internal diameter of .649, choked F/F (.028/.029, can be opened to your specifications for $45 per barrel and within 7 days of purchase), minimum barrel wall thickness of .027/.030, 2 9/16” chambers (can be lengthened with extended forcing cones to reduce recoil and improve patterns for $120), ribs are tight and barrels ring, no pits or heavy scratches, some light handling marks, ivory mid bead, gold post front bead, ejectors, barrels fit tight on breech face, just a great set of 92 year old barrels.
The action is beautiful with clear, sharp vine/floral style engraving, 80% vivid case color, action tight on breech face with lever right of center, excellent screws, well timed ejectors, crisp double triggers, trigger guard retains 80% original niter blue, a very well preserved Elsie.
The wood has been recently refinished and the checkering recut so it is near new, LOP 14 1/8” to butt plate, drop at heel 2 5/8”, drop at comb 1 5/8” (stock can be bent to your specs for $140 within7 days of purchase), nice shooting dimensions, no cracks or repairs.
The L.C. Smith guns are true sidelock actions and are strongly built and ready for modern day ammunition. Steel or other super hard shot should not be used. This gun has a lot of factory original condition left on the metal and is a great investment in a firearm you can enjoy and care for and if you ever decide to sell it, you will actually make money on it! How fun is that compared to a “stock portfolio”?
I have more photos upon request. This gun comes with a 30 day mechanical warranty. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER FINE VINTAGE FIREARMS ON THIS WEBSITE by clicking on the line that says “see all items from this seller”. I have many fine shotguns not yet listed so if you don’t see what you are after, ask me and I may have what you are after. Thanks for looking!
