Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine, serial # 540048B, cal. 44 W.C.F., 20" barrel with a good bore which shows evident rifling but minor pitting its full length, the barrel and magazine tube are an even mix of soft brown patina with tarnished pewter gunmetal gray and showing numerous light handling marks and dings and perhaps some sparsely scattered pin-prick pitting, the receiver and sideplates are more of a pewter with some brown oxidation staining minor dings and a few more spots of pinprick pitting but nothing drastic or alarming, lever and hammer are a darker gray-brown patina, the face of the lever showing some minor impact marks, buttstock rates good plus to very good and is uncleaned with raised grain evident from exposure to the elements and minor handling marks and light dings with two small cracks on the left and right of the upper tang at comb which show an old glued repair they are stable, the buttstock also has two old burn marks that appear to have been caused from the rifle being too close to a camp fire these definitely add character to this rifle if it could only talk, forend is in a similar state of condition with a glued repair to a crack ahead of the barrel band, caliber marking is only thinly evident on the brass cartridge lifter and the saddle ring and dust cover are intact, the original carbine style ladder rear sight is in place, overall a very honest 1899-manufactured saddle ring carbine that has a very pleasing "old West" look to it.
