From a local West Tennessee Estate comes this tight old L.C. Smith Double with Damascus Steel Barrels. From its 109000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1900, well before smokeless powder shotshells made it onto the market. Water table is marked O, for O / “ought” grade. Both tubes, then, show light pitting in the forward edges of the chambers and for about half the length of the tubes, that smooths out toward the muzzle. We estimate that 30 to 40 percent of the bore is affected in each side. Outside barrel surfaces are smooth and wavy, with six or eight tiny dings but no conspicuous dimples in either barrel. Metal surfaces are gray with brown patina, some of it mildly etchy in appearance. Receiver sides and undersides still show perhaps 20 percent of their original bluing. Rear tang screw is milled off replacement. Safety lever moves but does not prevent the shotgun from snapping. Both firing pins, and their springs and bushings are intact, and the hammer works. This old gun will shoot, if anyone cares to buy or load some black powder shells. It is not safe, of course, to shoot modern smokeless shotgun shells in Damascus barreled old guns like this. Extractor is operable and functional, as are the internal hammer. Note that there is a small amount of wood missing on the under side left side next to the receiver. Buttstock is original 14 inch length of pull, with ca. 1950s replacement butt plate; and the butt plate is cracked at the lower screw but intact and held in place with a home made third screw. Wood is original, with surface chipping at the back of the forend piece. Forend iron still shows substantial original bluing inside. Lockup is quite good, no slack or wiggle at all there. We rate this old L.C. at 20 percent, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. We’re offering this still-solid Damascus L.C. Smith 12 gauge for only $ 339.00.
