Description: Browning High-Power Medallion Grade (Belgium manufacture) bolt action rifle, Long Extractor -- Very Scarce Gun, 24” barrel.

Only made two years –1964, 1965 – Winchester introduced the caliber in 1963, Browning added it in 1964 but by 1966, the long extractor had been replaced by the short extractor. The long extractor is control feed; the short one is not. The Blue Book of Gun Values lists the calibers of the Medallion Grade from least scarce (30-06) to most scarce (284 Win), BUT the .300 Win Mag is not even listed. Manufactured in 1965.

The Belgium Medallion Grade is a handmade rifle, of best quality, built on Browning’s own renowned FN Mauser action and features select figured walnut with skipline checkering with carved borders, a sculptured cheek piece, rosewood grip cap and forearm cap, set off with white line spacers made of holly wood.

Stock: The stock on this particular gun is medium brown color with feather crotch and burl figure equal to or better than any Medallion grade. The checkering consists of skip line diamonds, executed by hand by a master checkerer. The checkering patterns generously wrap around the forearm and meets at a point over the wrist. The original stock features two blued crossbolts, standard sling swivel eyes, and its Browning pad. Metal: The polished blue receiver and barrel have hand-engraved scroll. Trigger is gold plated. Trigger Guard and floor plate are engraved (floor plate has a ram’s head), and are gold filled (still bright), gold grooved trigger; stainless steel bolt, extractor, and cocking shroud – all original.

L.O.P. 13 3/4”, weight without scope and mounts, 8 lb. 12 oz. It is fitted with period hand-engraved Redfield rings (invisible screw-type) and comes with original Browning hard case. SCOPE IS NOT INCLUDED.

Some of the guns from this era were known to have had a salt-curing problem that caused rapid rusting of the metal areas in contact with the wood. This gun has been silver nitrate tested and is a “NO SALT” gun, guaranteed. According to the current USA Browning Custom Shop Dealer, Michael Murphy & Sons, if the Custom Shop were to build a Medallion today, the replacement cost would be in excess of $12,000.

Condition of this rifle is Collector New, as manufactured in 1965, with near Exhibition grade wood with exceptional color and feather pattern. Price includes engraved scope rings and case, shipping, $50. Must be shipped to FFL dealer.

About the Custom Shop: Ben Roberts recently wrote in his column for the Gun Mart, a review of his visit to the Browning Custom Shop in Herstal Belgium. Here are some excerpts from that review:

“Hand made sporting guns present the pinnacle of our industry the world over, whether it’s an English Purdey, French Demas, Italian Famars or a Belgian Browning. Each is special and unique, as much if not more a work of art than a tool. No wonder then that shooters around the globe yearn to possess one! Entering the Custom Shop is like stepping back in time. Instead of banks of CNC machines and crates of pre-manufactured parts awaiting assembly there are a few rows of benches at which the artisans of Herstal ply their craft. It is fitting then that [John Moses Browning’s] spirit lives on amongst the corridors of Herstal setting the standards all over again but this time for delivering a blend of human efforts and true manufacturing perfection into a brand that looks set to thrive well into the future.”
