E.F. Flues Single Barrel Trap, BEYOND SOUSA GRADE, 1 OF 13, MAGNIFICENT!
Emil Flues was an outside contractor with Ithaca having his own shop in Buffalo, NY. The Ithaca Flues Model double shotgun was Ithaca’s most successful shotgun, selling over 230,000 before the NID came into production. Flues created the first Ithaca Single Barrel Trap Gun, the “Flues Model”. Prior to the introduction of Ithaca’s SBT in 1915, Flues created several prototypes. This gun, SERIAL NUMBER 2, is a fantastic trap gun with incredible engineering, engraving, and embellishments beyond the most famous Sousa Grade that was to follow. The gun was made around 1913 and is addressed as a Buffalo N.Y. gun. The engineering has to be seen to believe and the unique features are too numerous for this writing. The action body is very shallow at 2 3/16” top to bottom making it the most graceful SBT I have ever seen, modern or vintage. For those interested in Trap Guns, or having a piece of early American shotgun history of the finest kind, this is a real treasure. Flues only made 13 of these prototype guns before the first Ithaca SBT was produced. To this day it is a shooting machine and a real investment quality, useable shotgun. The gun has a chapter dedicated to it in the book authored by Frank Conley, “The American Single Barrel Trap Gun”. How often do you get the chance to own 1 of 13 produced?
The 32” barrel retains 90% blue with no major scratches, no dents, excellent bore, choked IM at .028 restriction, bore diameter .732”, minimum barrel wall thickness of 78 thou!!!, 2 ¾” chambers, removable vent rib of Flues’ patent, double ivory beads, nitro proofed for modern standard trap loads, profusely engraved 4” above the breech, all in perfect order.
The action may be the most compact SBT action ever devised at 2 3/16” top to bottom, covered by English scroll engraving with 4 raised gold inlays, action tight on breech face and hinge pin, crisp trigger, traces of case color remains leaving the engraving bold and beautiful, and NO SCREWS! The action back is scalloped and the stock is a draw bolt design so there are no top or bottom tangs to speak of. This gun was way ahead of its time. The highest grade Ithaca made was the hallowed “Sousa Grade” and this gun has more engraving than the Sousa! REALLY OVER THE TOP!
The fully figured French walnut has a fine oil finish, fancy checkering patterns with ribbons and 28LPI checkering in excellent condition, no structural cracks or splits, LOP 14 3/16” to a Hawkins pad, 13 3/16” LOP to the end of the wood, 1 5/8” drop at heel, 1 3/8” drop at comb, ½” cast on (can be bent to your specs within 10 days of purchase. We can get the stock back to neutral or even cast off for a right handed shooter). The forend is the only American Trap gun with 2 solid attachments to the barrel and 4 machine screws (2 from each side) helping attach the wood to the forend iron.
The gun weighs 8lbs. 14oz. and balances forward of the hinge pin. With its shallow receiver, scalloped action, profuse engraving, 4 heavy gold inlays, fantastic wood, screwless action, and truly unique locking mechanisms, this gun is a marvel of engineering and a true work of art. When considering collectible, investment quality firearms this one has it all. It was the predecessor to the most successful trap gun in American history, it is highly ornate, and extremely rare with less than a dozen on the planet, not one of them alike. I have no hesitation is stating it is the finest SBT I have ever held. The late Jack Puglisi told me that the gun was very much like a Prussian Daly Diamond Grade SBT he once had with none finer. That is powerful coming from a man that has owned the finest shotguns the world has ever seen.
There are more photos upon request. THERE IS A 30 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY ON THIS GUN. Please see my other fine Vintage Firearms on this website. Just click on the line in the ad that says “see all
