From a local West Tennessee Estate comes this very attractive L.C. Smith Field Grade Double. From its FWS prefix, 27000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1947. Manufacturer was L.C. Smith Gun Company of Fulton, New York. Construction is Armor Steel, and so marked on the under side of both barrel tubes. Receiver is color casehardened, with blued steel double triggers, breech lever, and tang safety. Buttstock and forend are cut checkered American Walnut. Barrels are 30 inch, with raised serrated top solid rib. Right, modified tube, has a muzzle diameter of .700 and left tube Full Choke .681 at the muzzle. Wall thickness is .055 at the muzzle on the right tube, and .061 on the left tube. Lockup is excellent, with the breech lever still retaining right hand cant. This field model has a single extractor block, as the photos show. Bore and chambers are smooth and clean, with no signs of pitting whatsoever. There are no dimples in the barrel anywhere. Buttstock measures 14 1/8 inch length of pull from the forward trigger face to the end of the butt plate. Weight empty is 7 pounds 11 ounces, with center of gravity an inch forward of the receiver. Bluing is strong on the barrel’s vertical surfaces, but weak on their laterals, with some grayish brown toning. Similarly, the receiver holds the majority of its original case coloring, with etchy freckling affecting the lateral side plates. We rate this LC as Good, perhaps Very Good, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate. Note that the buttstock and forend still carry some of their original glossy finish, perhaps the majority of it.
