If you review Ned Schwing's book on the Model 21, one of the tables showing production numbers of the Custom Shop Model 21 guns indicates there were no Pigeon Grades produced in 16ga. during the years of 1969 to 1982. In fact only 37 Pigeons in all gauges were built 1 when the Pigeon Grade was discontinued. The gun offered here for sale is an internally ordered gun, ordered by Olin Mathieson Chem. Corp., sold to the same. Included with the sale is the factory order document detailing the production of SN33501 and the factory shipping box. The gun matches the letter precisely. This is a finely built Winchester shipped in 1981 with many custom ordered features. Rarity aside, this is a wonderfully balanced, 7lb. 6oz. target and game gun extraordinaire. With finely figured wood, B carved checkering, ventilated rib, all housed in top quality leather case, this is a gun sure to impress its new owner and friends. These high end, rarely seen, low production, special order Model 21's are highly sought after and represent a sound investment opportunity that is far more rewarding than paper stocks.
The 28" barrels retain 99.5% factory blue, mirror bores, ventilated rib, choked WS1/WS2, internal bore diameter .661 both barrels, minimum barrel wall thickness .036 both barrels, no dents or scratches, 2 3/4" chambers, ribs tight, red front bead, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin, extra engraving on breech of barrels, all bright metal engine turned or "jeweled", a perfect set of barrels.
The action is #6 engraved, action tight with lever centered, ejectors strong and timed, SST Gold trigger with crisp pulls, 4lbs. pull right and left trigger, trigger guard 99.5% blue, auto safety, perfect screws, clear sharp engraving with deep carved oak leaf fences, all in perfect mechanical order.
The AA Fancy American walnut is fully figured and oil finished, B carved checkering pattern, black ebony inlay in forend, no cracks, splits or repairs anywhere, 14 1/2" LOP to factory butt plate, 2 1/2" drop in heel, 1 1/2" drop at comb, neutral cast (can be bent to your specs for about $180 within 10 days of purchase), superb wood to metal fit.
There is little or no wear on this fine Winchester and it may be unfired. The gun is spectacular in every way, and if you like the 16 gauge guns, this may be THE ONLY PIGEON GRADE EVER MADE IN 16 GAUGE BY THE WINCHESTER CUSTOM SHOP. A better investment quality Winchester is not likely to be found, as this one is priced to sell.
