RARE US Second Contract 1839 Eli Whitney Flintlock Musket, .69 cal. smooth bore with 42” barrel. The stock is in very good condition with no major cracks or repairs, just the usual nicks and bruises for a 174 year old flintlock musket. Original configuration not converted to percussion.The name J. A. Fleming is carved in the side of the stock. J. A. Fleming was from Hampshire County, WV. Information was obtained from his decedents when the rifle was purchased in WV at an estate sale. The lock is strong and functions correctly on half cock and full cock. Lockplate has turned a dark plum patina and stamped with the US over E. Whitney, forward of the hammer. New Haven and the date 1839, rear of the hammer. Flash hole in barrel is unclogged. Brass flash pan. Cartouche in the stock near the side plate. US stamped on buttplate. Inspectors marks on barrel near breech. Three barrel bands, sling swivels and stud for socket bayonet at top of barrel near muzzle.The balance of the metal is a gray patina with light pitting. The bore is dusty but in very good condition. Original ram rod included. Very nice condition flintlock. Early Historical collectable firearm. Priced to sell.
