A.H. Fox AE 20ga. w/FACTORY BEAVERTAIL- TRAP STYLE
It is not often you see a Fox with a beavertail, let alone a 20ga. with the “TRAP STYLE” beavertail with the Schnabel type tip. This gun was manufactured around 1918 and seems to be more of a target gun or heavy bird gun than a light upland gun. The wood is nicely figured and the gun is in excellent condition overall.
The 28” number 2 weight KRUPP STEEL barrels have double ivory beads, 98% factory blue, mirror bores with an internal bore diameter of .616/.617, minimum barrel wall thickness of 40 thousandths (very heavy walls), choked SK/M (.002/.020), ribs are tight and barrels ring true, 2 ¾” chambers with lengthened forcing cones, no dents or dings, ejectors, barrels tight on breech face and hinge, a really great set of heavy duty barrels.
The action retains about 20% case color, clear, sharp engraving, excellent screws, double triggers with crisp pulls, trigger guard retains 50% factory niter blue, action is tight with lever right of center, ejectors are strong and properly timed, all in great shape.
The wood is nicely figured walnut with most all of the factory finish remaining. The butt stock is a capped pistol grip with clean factory checkering, forend is the “trap style” beavertail with clean, sharp checkering. The LOP to the factory buttplate is 14 1/4”, drop at heel 2 1/8”, drop at comb 1 ¼”, there are no cracks or repairs in buttstock, all in great shape. Stock dimensions can be altered to your requirements for an additional fee by bending and/or addition of a pad.
This is a very unusual Fox small bore. It weighs in at 6lbs. 15oz. and has dimensions that are high enough to shoot trap or sporting clays with. The weight of the gun will greatly decrease felt recoil, but the gun balances very nicely ¾” in front of the hinge pin making it feel like a much lighter gun between the hands. With the double ivories, forward weighte barrels, and wonderful shooting dimensions, I can see this being a competitive Sporting clays gun for those that wish to shoot a 20ga. gun. It would also be great on any high volume dove or pigeon shoots or on driven game events. The gun is fully capable of shooting heavy loads for ducks or pheasants. The rare configuration makes this gun a great addition to any Fox collection and an investment that is sure to appreciate over time. You will see very few factory beavertail Fox 20ga. guns in a lifetime of looking. Don’t let this one get past you!
I have more photos upon request. This gun comes with a 30 day mechanical warranty in addition to the customary 3 day inspection. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER FINE VINTAGE FIREARMS ON THIS WEBSITE.
