Winchester collectors are very aware of the rarity of a genuine Model 42 with factory engraving and factory B carved wood, or a Pigeon Grade for that matter. If you have followed my listings over the years you recognize I come across some amazing guns, and strive to accurately represent them to our prospective clients. I have thoroughly examined this little .410 and believe it to be the real deal...a near new, factory original, custom ordered Model 42. I have owned more than a few factory original Model 42's, Model 12's, and LOTS of Model 21's. I am able to recognize restored guns or guns that have been altered from the factory original finishes. This gun, sn110445 was built around 1956 or so based upon the barrel inscriptions and the factory donut post ventilated rib and its straight line matting. The nicely figured wood is B Carved and in near perfect condition. The gun has been fired, but not very much. There is slight wear on the jeweled bolt and slide. It carries the correct grip cap for its date, and the engraving is a version of 42-3 B or C, with a duck on the left side and a dog on the right side. The amount of scroll and the engraving in the corners of the receiver cause me to judge it as 42-3. Most are aware that there is variation from gun to gun on how the engraving was carried out, as well as the stock carvings, as can be seen in Ned Schwing's book "THE WINCHESTER MODEL 42". I see at least 3 different variations of B carvings in his book. The degree of polish on the metal, the perfection of the stampings, the clarity of the engraving are all indicative of the Pigeon Grade special order M42. Rare in any condition, this is one gorgeous Model 42 considering features and condition. Winchesters are always a solid investment vehicle, and we all know how serious those who collect American .410 shotguns are. Don't let this one get away!
