This is a Winchester Model 71, .348 WCF, originally a standard, shipped in 1940 (serial #16xxx). It is a short tang, and is the earliest one I have seen. Probably in the late '40's or early '50's in was fitted for a left handed shooter and had a scope mounted with an Echo side mount. (Echo mounts were noted for their strength. This one is mounted to the right side of the receiver with three screws and two fixed pins.) The rings are 7/8", just the size for a Lyman Alaskan, pictured with the gun, included in the sale (reticle is fine cross hairs with small center dot). A Hawkins recoil pad was added, as well as ebony and ivory diamond inlays, popular in that era for high quality custom guns. There are two sling swivels holes near the stock's toe which have been filled, one with walnut and one with ebony. The gun has probably 95% of its original metal finish, and the stocks, though refinished, are tight with no cracks or splits. Bore and mechanics are in great condition.

This is a fine example of a mid-20th century lever hunting rifle, plenty stout enough for any North American game, and one of the few tailored for a left handed shooter. We take VISA and MasterCard for an additional 4% fee. We will also trade for U.S. silver and gold coins at spot value.
