Blake Shelton to Quit “The Voice” Over NBC Remington Hit Piece?

Authors Current Events Paul Helinski
This is part one of the NBC video. You will have to sit through a 15 second commercial, and they will make money from this, but if you have the time to watch, it will amaze you how just plain stupid they think people are these days.

This is the second video, with the 2nd degree murderer.

While NBC goes to great expense to show you a 3D animated drawing of the problem, nowhere do they actually try to get a gun to fire without pulling the trigger.

Yet if you watch the defensive vidoes on RespectRemington.tv, their “expert” Tom Butters is clearly shown banging with a sledgehammer on Mr. Yerger’s gun, to no avail.

The videos on the Remington website are bigger and there are more of them, but this will give you an idea.

This letter from the “Oklahoma Forensics Lab Inc.” claims that the testers were able to get the gun to fire without pulling the trigger. But they don’t report on NBC that the report concluded that the gun was not flawed or defective. NBC also makes them sound like a government agency, which they clearly are not. The gun was returned to Remington and as you can see above, tested extensively for other court cases in which that case was attempted to be used as evidence of the faulty CFC.

Americans should be outraged at the cheap parlor tricks in this report, all in the name of attacking our gun rights through the back door, hitting the industry in the pocket where it counts.

Firearms accidents do happen, mostly because of stupid mistakes that nobody wants to make, but using a photo like this for ratings and controversy is supposed to be outside the realm of honest journalism. Think about the pictures that could be shown on TV about every manner of injury and death. Why do we let them get away with it on gun stories?

The guy in that photo originally told police he was relieving himself when the 39oz. trigger pull gun slide to the ground and fired. It turned into the mess and lies you see here.

The Remington response is extremely effective, but how many people will go to their website? Could it be that Remington should push the envelope on this one and take NBC to court for libel? I think yes.

Don’t worry, Blake Shelton isn’t quitting “The Voice” on NBC. That was just to get you to click this and read it. He should though, if he really believes in “representing country values” that he so lectured his contestant ReaLynn this past week. And for everyone reading this, and even those who didn’t click on it, we should all boycott “The Voice” and everything else on NBC until they issue a public apology to Remington. But like Blake Shelton, we won’t. All of us love guns, we love shooting, and we are proud to support the 2nd Amendment, but we really won’t pull the plug on things we like in protest of a perverted hit piece on Remington that was created to attack our gun industry and our 2nd Amendment freedom.

The piece aired on something called Rock Center on April 11th on NBC. It artificially creates a controversy about the fire control mechanism on Remington shotguns and some rifles, and yes, it includes the 870 and the 1100 guns you most likely own and cherish. The host admits that there are tens of millions of these guns in circulation and daily use nationwide, but fails to note the statistical impossibility of their claims. . Remington shotguns are the most common sporting shotguns on the planet, and they have also become the most popular shotguns in law enforcement.

Literally billions of shotgun rounds have been fired from Remington shotguns over the years with no problems at all, but sadly, NBC insisted on airing this piece on a few anecdotal cases with questionable circumstances where a Remington firearm was involved in an injury or death. They also gave a voice to a perverse critic of Remington who has testified as a paid expert against Remington in over 100 injury cases, as well as against a dozen other firearm manufacturers. But at no point does the expert or NBC demonstrate a gun, or even a mechanism, that will fire without the trigger being pulled, and despite some nasty injury pictures, they are not able to mention one case in all of these cases where a civil jury has found a Remington firearm to be faulty. The “dangerous secret” is that your network is biased against guns and that nobody bothers to hold your feet to the fire.

NBC, you should be ashamed. America, we should be outraged. Blake Shelton, you should quit buddy.

Politics is about the best way to get people to stop reading an article like this, but if I don’t mention this up front I think it will get lost in the details. As you’ll see, a twelve year old with a clue could watch this video and pick out most of the points I’ll mention, so why on earth would NBC air this, knowing that it is nothing short of libelous, to the extent of scandalous. When it was finally edited and done, they had to know how bad it really was. Why air it? The answer is two, ratings and politics.

On the rating side, everyone loves a controversy. Controversy gets them ratings, ratings brings in money. I almost didn’t embed this so they wouldn’t get paid, but you need to watch it. It cost them a lot to produced this piece. The reporter on this case, Scott Cohn, worked on it for months Remington isn’t going to sue them for libel, so they have no risk in running it. The ad dollars will stack up regardless.

The other things is politics. At the end of the second video Steve Cohn attempts to relieve the fears of Americans that the hit piece was not in fact to try to induce the government to institute new laws governing firearm recalls. But what he didn’t know when he filmed this segment was that Brian Williams, the host, would ultimately introduced the piece with just this issue. I’m sure the writers did this intentionally, knowing the firestorm it would create, but the voters remember the controversy, not the substance. Brian Williams says the following:

“As we get into our next story think about this: If a dangerous problem is discovered in our car or our food or medicine the government can force the manufacturer to issue a recall. It may surprise you that if a gun has a dangerous serious defect, there is no federal agency with the power to order a recall. The industry polices itself. Keep that in mind as you watch our next story with CNBC’s Scott Kohn whose been reporting on this for us for months.”

They then proceed to work through two nasty cases where the injured party blames a Remington shotgun for the horrifying injury they received from not handling their firearm safely. Firearms accidents happen, but we choose to own and use our guns, and we know they are potentially dangerous things. Tens of thousands of people die on the highways every year because they choose to drive a car. Thousands of children die in swimming pools because families decide to have a pool, and over a thousand children die every year from suffocation with a plastic bag, mostly shopping bags from grocery stores. Accidents in life happen and people get hurt and die. As a statistical percentage, firearm accidents are far below the rate of far less dangerous hobbies, even soccer.

The claim in the NBC piece is that Remington’s “common fire control” found in its shotguns and some rifles can fire by itself when the gun is jarred by striking it on the butt. The most scary thing is that Mr. Cohn repeats over and over, ” these guns can just go off, with the safety on, without pulling the trigger, just go off.” With the accompanying graphic photos of a total of four injuries and one death, NBC is clearly attempting to scare people, claiming that Remington is “hiding dangerous secrets about its common fire control, the CFC.” Who wouldn’t be scared?

Getting people to listen to a story about a supposed big corporation dirty secret in the post Enron world isn’t difficult. The problem is, in the gun industry, even our big corporations aren’t so big. My friend Tom Gresham at Gun Talk® has said, “the entire firearms industry is not as big as Toys R’ Us.” Gun companies can’t afford lengthy litigation. That is why the government passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce Act. Colt was effectively put out of business by lawsuits. They are just coming back into the consumer market now. Ruger took a big beating, and Smith & Wesson is still recovering from concessions they made to avoid the wrath of the anti-gunners.

Nonetheless, Remington is perceived as a big faceless corporation. A big corporation must have secrets, right? It is easy to suck in a TV viewer with this kind of nonsense. If you go to the website Remington created called RespectRemington.tv, or watch a couple of the videos we have here from it, you’ll see how they only showed half the story on the isolated stories they were able to stir up. If you take the time to watch them all, the whole scenario is shocking and offensive. You just have to ask the question, why?

With the rising tide of an enormous popularity in firearms and shooting, what is the best way to turn that tide? Well this would of course be to tell you that the gun in your closet is going to go off by itself and kill or maim you. Remington is just the lamb being led to the NBC slaughter because Remington is undoubtedly the most endearing brand among avid hunters, a group that is historically not avid shooters and 2nd Amendment supporters when it comes to non-hunting firearms. Tell a voter that his treasured Remington is “hiding a dangerous secret” and, at least their thinking probably goes, that voter is no longer a factor in the anti-2nd Amendment vote. Is this a last gasp from a dying mainstream media that few people watch? I hadn’t heard of “Rock Center” before. Had you?

For specifics, you don’t need to look further than their “expert.” Don’t laugh. Really, don’t laugh, but this idiot doesn’t even bother to show you a CFC dropping the hammer without the trigger being pulled. He is holding one in his hand in the video and he claims, as does Cohn, that with a little bit of debris, this thing can go off by itself. Please, Mr. Expert (Tom Butters is his name, may it be blotted out), next time, can you get a plastic tupperware and fill it with dirt, mud, ashes, something dirty, and dip the CFC in it a few times, then whack it with a hammer. Please, at least show us that this can happen. If you want to get really elaborate, there are in fact tens of millions of these guns out there. Buy a few, find one that will go off by mistake, then put a shell in it and bang the butt on camera until she pops.

There is none of this in the piece whatsoever. On the RespectRemington.tv video about the first case, Mr. Butters is shown banging on the victim’s gun with sledgehammer, unable to get it to fire without pulling the trigger. He then clearly gives up and states that he can’t get it to fire.

Even if you look in the statistics in the video, Williams says that in a five month investigation, they uncovered a total of 125 cases involving the CFC, with 75 injuries and 7 deaths, SINCE 1973. There are more cases of injuries and deaths by nose hair tweezers since 1973 than a faulty Remington CFC I’m quite sure. They even have the audacity, towards the end of second video in the web version of the piece, to imply that a convicted 2nd degree murderer in jail for 20 years is innocent of killing his wife for the insurance because of a defective Remington CFC. Again, shame on you NBC, and shame on us for not letting them know that this kind of thing cannot be tolerated in attacking our gun companies, the makers of the guns that we hunt with, that we protect our lives with, and that we guard against the threat of tyranny with.

Williams (the narrator) states repeatedly that Remington refused to give them an expert for the case, to defend against the claims of Mr. Butters, yet they quote an expert later, then claim that they weren’t able to talk to talk to him. Where is the “man in the street” shot of him trying to avoid you Steve? The best piece of evidence is a forensic report from the “Oklahoma Forensic Lab Inc., ” clearly not a government entity and just a private company. The NBC video states that the lab report was able to duplicate the behavior of the gun going off without the trigger being pulled. You’d think this would be the smoking gun, and it is billed as such. But strangely, the person involved, who lost part of his hand, never sued Remington. That is something that happens all the time isn’t it? Well it might be the rest of the report, that NBC conveniently leaves out, but that Remington shows on their defense website. The private, paid lab measured a 39 oz. trigger pull on the gun and concluded that it was not a manufacturing defect or design flaw that caused the gun to fire.

They also claim in the piece that they have a letter from a gun dealer going back to 1957 that told Remington that there were problems with the guns with gunsmiths all over, but what has happened since 1957? Couldn’t you find even one gunsmith to go on camera for money who would say that he has seen this problem come into his shop, or that he can demonstrate how this happens regularly? Come on guys? Just one, for money? How hard could that possibly be for hacks like you? But yet it isn’t there.

Not being a student of the law, I can’t say whether Remington would have a real libel case against NBC here. I can say that I think they should go on the offensive and try, because with even half the clearly intentional misrepresentations in this video even the dumbed downest civil jury would find for Remington. But the editors are very careful to make sure that the most hardened and unsubstantiated claims come from Scott Cohn in the form of a question, validated by people with no assets, and nothing to lose by going on camera. Remington shouldn’t have to deal with this. They should be able to put their energy and passion into their guns, and into the future of their business. Nothing to lose is the position of the mainstream media these days, and I hope Remington puts them in their place.

Blake Shelton I hope you are reading this, and I hope you do have country values. Because if you do, those of us who are still willing to even watch “The Voice” after this will see an empty chair next week. You are the only part of that show that is giving Idol a run for its money, and NBC doesn’t deserve the genuine care and country values you bring. NBC, you should publicly apologize to Remington, and send them a box of chocolates for not suing you for libel. Go after baby strollers or Chinese toys next time, and LEAVE OUR HONEST AMERICAN GUN COMPANIES ALONE.

Well here in PA. you would be fined for leaning loaded gun against a vehicle for this very reason.

  • pat May 29, 2013, 9:18 am

When Remington sues the living poop out of them, the only punishment they shoulde demand is that NBC air, multiple times a week in PRIMETIME that “NBC is known for airing false, libel, and untruthful information about Remington, GM, and untold other companies, anyone watching should do so with the knowledge that anything they see or hear on this network could be completely false” As the voice-over is talking they should use as the video back drop the GM trucks they intentionally exploded and the lies in this article. with specific points of reference to the lies. That should be forced to air for ten years! And they should also be forced to air that they were sued, and lost the lawsuits.

  • pat May 29, 2013, 8:55 am

C’MON PEOPLE! Who the hell even watched NBC ever since they rigged the Chevy trucks to blow up year and YEARS ago! They have an agenda, if you didn’t know that already, then you are an idiot! ANY network that works this hard to push a lie is not worth being aired on your tv, so you have no one to blame but yourselves. They should have done a story on how remington has sold out to the liberal pukes obama in his merry band of thieving thugs!

A lot of pro’s and con’s have been leveled at Remington and I am simply going to fill in my own personal experience with Remington. I own three 870’s (1-12 ga, 2- 20’s), a 552 and a 572 (.22 cal.), and a 722 in .257 Roberts, and a Marlin 60. Each of them have all been extensively used, abused, and sometimes put up wet at times, but all in all, great care has been taken to always follow factory advice to clean and lube them properly over the years. The only experience I have had personally with Remington involved the 722. I called, asked for , and EASILY was put in touch with and spoke to the head of gun repair department and discussed in detail what I needed done. He took the time to ask many questions regarding my rifle and he asked me to ship it to him with ATTENTION to him personally on the box (I was shipping it to them for a trigger modification and safety knob replacement). It took a total of four days (yes, I said four days) to ship it, have it repaired, and returned (That’s Dallas to New York and back). When I got it back, it had been (without my asking) test fired, head space checked, cleaned and lubed, and (what I asked for) repaired. Am I a Remington fan – goes without saying. Have they treated me right – you bet. Would I buy another Remington – oh yeah. Have I ever had ANY problem with ANY of my Remington made firearms? Only the Marlin was picky about ammo and once I started using Federal or CCI, it is flawless. So my take on the whole situation is very simple – Remington is a fine American institution who deserves the respect and admiration of millions of SATISFIED users of their fine products. I am not so blind that something may have gone amiss and a product wasn’t up to their usual high standards (altogether now – can everyone say Ford PINTO – stuff happens even to the good guys), but there are just too many of their fine products out there and so many people that wouldn’t give a Remington up easily unless it possibly was being passed down to a son, daughter, grandson, etc. NBC and Brian Williams don’t come into my house anyway and again they have proven to the world why fewer and fewer people watch them/him – – and Blake – – man up and show them what you are really made of.

I do have a friend that his remington .300 mag. did go off when closing the bolt. A friend of mine was going to borrow the rifle for a hunt in Montana we were going on. They were standing on the deck behind his home when he cycled the bolt and the rifle did go off without anything near the trigger. Just stating a fact and can give you the persons name if you want to contact to get the story first hand.
I personally like model 70’s and their safety and will not switch, I have 7 and carry them in the snow and ice in the U.S. and dust and rain of Africa. Spent 3 months in the bush last year and have never had an issue with a model 70.
    Have a great day,

What is to be expected from the “news” network that deceitfully rigged GM pickup trucks with explosives to cause them to appear to explode in a ball of flame upon side impact from another vehicle in a simulated collision and then “report” that the explosions were due to faulty fuel systems? And what is to be expected from a “news” network that allowed a full year to pass by before it got around to reporting ANYTHING about Eric Holder’s and BATFE’s strictly illegal and deceitful “Fast and Furious” scandal that was designed to intentionally increase the number of US origin firearms falling into the hands of murderous Mexican drug lords? And NBC’s “reporting” has been marginal at best and always sympathetic to those responsible for initiating the scandal in the first place. Any connection between real news and NBC is strictly coincidental, accidental and wholly unintentional.

  • Mike Merritt December 11, 2012, 2:09 am

You can rely on one thing from NBC, and that is the simple fact that THEY are the network that had a vehicle rigged to catch fire and burn on camera…’73-’87 GM trucks..They were caught, they were sued, they lost, and yet NBC had been doing the very same with this false and mis-leading story on Remgington…Any company that sets up a false premise to prove their side of a story cannot be trusted in the least… Like many people commenting on here I own several of these model guns at the heart of NBC’s story and over many many years they’ve been dropped, bumped, fallen from a leaning position, loaded and Never Ever has one of these firearms discharged…Now let me ask something of the people commenting here…In comparison to every other product you know of be they a firearm or not, when a company produces 20,000,000 of something and all NBC can find are 125 supposed complaints, wouldn’t you say that is a fairly safe product? Out of the 125 “complaints” NBC drug up, be they real or not, production numbers would indicate that those 125 people are in direct and complete difference to the 160,000 to 1 ratio of safe operations…

I boycotted both the National Barack Channel (NBC) and the All Barack Channel (ABC) years ago!!! (CBS too!) Not a single one of them is worth the contents of an outhouse!!!!!

Actually, the contents of an outhouse can be MUCH more valuable than the clowns you mention.

  • spd522 December 10, 2012, 10:13 pm

Did a lot of maintenance on Remingtons over the years as an armorer for my police dept. We had M700 sniper rifles for SWAT and 870 shotguns for everyone. Occasionally had to replace springs or bent slide bars. Cops can screw up about anything. But the guns always worked and functioned. Never had a 700 or 870 go bang unless the trigger was pulled. Not from worn parts, not from defective manufacturing.

I myself have two 700s and 5 870s. One of the 870s is 22 yrs old, one of the 700s is 20 yrs old. Both still run like
champs and other than cleaning, no parts have ever required replacing. My other 700 is just a yr old and has been a tack driver since taking it out of the box. My other 3 870s are SWAT entry guns. Abused and beat to crap, they still work perfectly.

Liberal media doing it’s thing. I don’t place much stock in their mindless games.

  • paul fusillo December 10, 2012, 8:51 pm

I f you actually want to accomplish something when you disagree with a networks position you should write to their advertisers and try not to buy that advertisers product. In your correspondence advise the advertisers of your position and intention not to use their product and encourage others to do the same. If enough people bother to do this instead of complaining about the un-trustworthy media and then switching the TV on to the nertwork shows maybe something will be accomplished

  • Frank December 10, 2012, 8:49 pm

I HAVE NOT watched the “Koolaid sippers” for over 10 years, and I do not read the liberal media either. If I want to hear lies, I’ll ask my 18 year old how the scratch got on the car.

  • bruceD December 10, 2012, 4:02 pm

TV networks are made up of many production companies producing shows. I am guessing they don’t have a lot of say or impact on one of the other shows or even commercials. Now, if you don’t want to watch Brian Williams again, that is OK. But to paint a wide brush over all the programs seems a little extreme. I don’t personally think Brian Williams is that good of a neutral reporter. Don’t watch him much. If others feel that way and turn his program off, the network might get the message. Well emails and such help also.

I have owned and shot remington shotguns since I was a kid and never had an issue. At present time I own 887 tactical, best one I have owned or shot.About Blake Shelton this is not only reason he should quit the voice but I doubt he will. One of the other reasons is NBCs blatant anti gun stance ie;that liberal leftwing elitist blowhard Bob Costas and his misinformed retoric on sunday night football a week ago,and his subsequent interviews with Bill O’rielly trying to backtrack and lie about what he said.I already boycott NBC and try to get everyone I know to do so.this station hires 3 or 4 of the most leftwing liberal elitist so called reporters on television: Bob Costas,Brian Williams,Ann Coury,Katie Couricand others that like to stretch the truth and facts to their liking.

    • debryan1 December 11, 2012, 12:45 am

Boycott NBC , go one step farther, there owned by GE , , I had to by some light bulbs some time back , and a salesman said “these ones are on sale” I said “TOO BAD THERE MADE BY GE” who owns NBC,MSNBC, ya Know , the anit gun clowns ! , the far left morons ! so they talk crap , and I wont watch there crap or by there crap!

    Some very interesting comments.
Must say, looks like NBC is the loser here.
I, also, have several Remington firearms from the early ’70’s. Never experienced a problem.

  • Jeff December 10, 2012, 11:35 am

I have 8 , 870s including 4 wing masters I have never had any problem with any of them, as for NBC I watch the shows on there channel but I refuse to buy any product I see advertised on NBC due to all the lies and 1/2 truths I have seen over the last few years broadcasted on the NBC news, sometimes its better than the comedy channel but its still bull. The latest one was the NYPD Policeman that bought the boots forthe homless guy NBC said he stoped wearing them because he thougt he would be killed because the boots were to nice and someone would try to steal them , but when he was interviewed the man himself said and I quote ( the pic,s had gone viral and he wanted a piece of the pie or he would not put the boots back on ) thats just one example of NBC bull and there are many more so thats my stand hope you join me , it would be hard to tell lies if they dont have a way to pay for it!!!

  • Shane December 10, 2012, 11:30 am

I have left my loaded Jericho in my glove compartment in my car every day I go to work, for the past 3 years. Never has the Florida heat caused my gun to involuntarily misfire, and my safety is always on (unless it’s being used); I’ve also dropped it a few times while a round was in the chamber and it never discharged. I’ve seen Remington rifles (the cheap 770 model) barrels explode after less than 1,000 rounds have been shot, but their shotguns have always had a reputation as being extremely reliable. I have a feeling that the “victim” in the first video isn’t telling us the whole truth.

  • walt harper December 10, 2012, 9:57 am

All good points Gentlemen! At least the ones about NBC distorting facts to gain market share. NBC’s balance sheet must be excellent. I love shooting sports like most of us here but has anyone noticed that kids are taught firearm safety (Maybe) but never cartridge safety? I had one good scare with a pistol I didn’t load and another time I violated my own rule of never storing a pistol cocked and loaded. Remington can’t fix stupid anymore than you and I. Get the word out to everyone-finger off trigger and barrel safe always! “I didn’t mean to” will not keep you out of prison or heal a broken heart. I have Grandpa’s Remington Model 12 and it’s accurate even though it’s 90 years old. It’s my most precious rifle.

  • Gary Minter December 10, 2012, 9:31 am

NBC, isn’t that the same network that did the hack job falsified trumped up expose about GM pick up truck fuel tanks in the 1970’s.

TV news is just that television, I learned at a young age television is make believe.

  • Jeff December 10, 2012, 9:21 am

One more example of the sickness that we have in this country. The anti-gun agenda will stop at nothing to make firearms out to be a evil enity that is the cause of death and distruction. At no time will they look at the root cause ie. the idiot who pulled the trigger. People really need to think for themselves and not let a group that is hell bent on taking away our 2nd ammendment rights control their thought process.

  • chuck December 10, 2012, 8:59 am

    First,

I have learned a financially painful lesson. I didn’t know the actual “facts” behind that story but,if what you say is true I have been defrauded,no,not be Remington but by N.B.C. This “fable” was broadcast n6umerous times on CNBC!

I assumed which one cannot do that the story was true based on the idea that Remington would have “sued” if the story was Libel/slander. I am quite sure I am NOT the only one!

I had bought a Remington shotgun only a couple of weeks earlier after speaking to people “in the in6dustry” who all said the story was “Bull”. The concen6sous was that almost everyon6e I spoke with had a Remin6gton as their weapon of choice because it was simply the “best” shotgun” in the market.

I asked several of my friends who “own” and each said that Remington was the “best” gun for the money, but,I was still concerned. I thought that if the hours long program was false than Remington would have taken this “hack job” to court and sued to to represent themselves and the millions like me who had purchased the gun

I was NOT comfortable with my shotgun fearing the kind of “accidental” “discharge” that this “documentary” presente as “Fact”

I decided to return the gun an6d get another which cost me “hundreds of dollars in depreciation and the purchase of another shotgun!

I bought the gun as a means of protecting myself,my family,my land,my Freedom” if the need occurred!

Why was this allowed to “stand” by a legal system that has obviously “failed”? We have supposed “agencies” we pay “big” tax dollars to fund! They are sworn to protect “Both” the consumer and the company! against exactly crimes like this!

The system, the law,our Constitutional rights are obviously a fantasy as “crime” does pay in America when the system has “Failed” I am outraged as the coun6try I live in is NOT the Country I thought it was or the Country I grew up in!

I deplore the failure of the Constitution, tht,a perverted,a dishonest e legal system and particularly those we elect to do what they have “Sworn” to due as America has become a “sewer” of lies where the “rats” have created a bankrupt, devolving ,perverted version of what the Founders, the Framers and so many million “legal” immigrants risked “everything” to experience!

The American Dream has become the American Nightmare for most! The Constitution was written if for no other reason than to “LIMIT” government” protect the individual and look at what Obama and those who enable him have done!

Now,I will NOT settle for anything less than a purging of the Cancer” we have had for decades and a system that is true to the ideals and principles that “worked” for most for over 200 years!

So,America is and has been a “socialist State”

  • Dale Johnson December 10, 2012, 6:58 am

Gun control due to Muslims and communists? C’mon, they love guns more than we do! Ak’s are their carry piece. I bet they don’t blame Saiga when someone gets hit in the head from firing in the air all the time. Blame the media that has to manufacture stories to feed the 24 hour news beast.

I was once told by a Major Newsman that all reporters are trained to lie and make good reports look bad. So if you watch any news report take it with a grain of salt. The reporter who told me this Walter Cronkite.

  • boomdawg December 4, 2012, 4:44 pm

Rule #1 don’t point a firearm at anything you don’t want to shoot. Loaded, unloaded, broken, a piece of junk or not, don’t point it anywhere you don’t want a bullet to go. Mechanical devices break, malfunction or just don’t work as advertized. Having said that, I like my Remmington rifles and shotguns. I am the owner of a 700 Rem in .17 Rem and a part of the trigger mechanism broke. The gun would discharge when the bolt was closed. I took it apart and replaced the offending part and put it back in the rack. My son shoots varmints with it and loves it too. Firearms require care and should be cleaned and inspected through out their life. I did some research and there have been several cases reported that are similar to mine but I don’t know if it was the same part or not. I will say, I bought the gun second hand and there were tooling marks from someone trying to adjust the trigger so I don’t know what else they did to it. This wouldn’t and hasn’t stopped me from buying and shooting Remmington rifles and shotguns and I trust Remmington to tell me more of the truth than any TV news media outlet. Just my 2 cents.

  • mike May 20, 2012, 11:54 pm

The reason networks and their anchors say these things especially about firearms is that they know that the vast majority of US citizens aren’t gun savvy. Plus these talking heads on the TV don’t know what they are talking about anyway. They just know that they don’t like guns. How many times in movies have you seen guns tumbling down steps and firing on their own while doing so? How many times have you heard some one say “the gun went off”. Guns don’t go off, triggers get pulled but in our blameless society no one want to admit that they indeed pulled the trigger. Hell, half the time they are so gun ignorant they probably didn’t even know they pulled it.

  • Charlie May 17, 2012, 12:20 pm

Sounds like NBC got it wrong. I hate hearing unproven or untrue statements. Kinda like…….the subject of my email. “Blake Shelton quits the Voice for Remington”. At the top of this article the writer admits that he lied so you’d read the article.

Now, I couldn’t care less about Blake Shelton on the Voice, but I do care about someone…anyone, who’ll tell me an obvious lie just to draw my attention. Apparently the author only cares about the dishonesty of NBC.

    • mike May 20, 2012, 11:58 pm

At least he admitted it in the first paragraph. Do the talking heads ever admit to already having their minds made up and presenting “their” facts instead of “the” facts?

  • Terry Wilson April 27, 2012, 8:32 am

All this amounts to is anti gunners pitching their “guns aren’t safe” crap. No gun has ever went off without some type of human interaction. I’m not going to say that no gun has ever been made without a flaw. But the same can be said for anything man made. There are more people injured playing sports (including cheerleading) each year, than people injured in hunting accidents. As for these two incidents of dropping the firearm and leaning the firearm against the truck and it falling over, both caused by human involvement. As tragic as they both are, had the firearm not been dropped it would not have went off, and had the other firearm been unloaded and stored in the truck and lot leaned against it, again there would not have been a discharge. I once slid down a hillside in the snow and the gun in my holster went off, because it was an older handgun without a transfer bar between the hammer and firing pin. It wasn’t the guns fault, I knew there was not a transfer bar, I didn’t have the hammer down on an empty chamber and I chose to try traversing a steep hillside in the snow. Had I used my head I would not have been shot in the leg. If you leave a car running and parked on a steep hill without setting the parking brake and it jumps out of park, is it the car makers fault or your own for not taking the time to set the brake. Think about this with some common sense, Remington has made well over a million firearms and as tragic as they are, we are talking about a hundred or so accidents out of over a million firearms used in both the military, police and civilian market. The bottom line is there is no such thing as a mechanical device that will not fail, and there is not a one of us that has not had an accident (people make mistakes). This is simply another case of the anti gunners beating their anti gun drums. We are becoming a society that wants to blame someone else for our mistakes. Gun makers give us a list of do’s an don’ts are they also suppose to issue a techincal advisor with each firearm, so that they can follow us around each time we use the firearm and make sure we follow the guidelines they set for proper use.

  • JT April 25, 2012, 2:04 pm

I cannot believe the gentleman who inadvertently killed his wife was cleaning his gun whilst a round was sitting in the chamber. The whole rule of “separating ammo from cleaning area” is so well-advertised, almost to the point of broken-record. I’m not sure how anyone could forget that, and it only takes a few seconds to ensure your gun isn’t loaded before you start the cleaning process. The whole situation was tragic.

  • Administrator April 24, 2012, 5:53 pm

If anyone is following this story, Blake Shelton made a point to mention that he duck hunts last night on “The Voice.” Was this a shout out to GA and Remington? Why else would he pick this week to mention that?

  • JTiggidy April 23, 2012, 10:26 pm

Frankly, I am pleased to find out that NBC wasnt pushing for legislation to ban guns entierly like I had assumed. Sure they are not being fair to Remmington but like myselft probably could give a sheet what they say. No reasonable perspective gun owner is going to form their opinion on the matter based the bone headed, 2 million dollar insurance policy holding wife killer or NBC’s words.

This guy is guilty for being an idiot to the point of deserving jail AND he has a pretty solid motive. Every gun should be treated as if its loaded.. ALWAYS; more so when other people are involved. I could have just field stripped my weapon and still would not allow the barrel to point in my wifes direction. How would you NOT KNOW if the gun was loaded or not…. How can you NOT be sure the safetly was on? The phrase “People kill people not guns” fits this scenario just as well as violence.

  • Stephen Diehl April 23, 2012, 11:28 am

I was taught neaver trust the gun loaded allways unload a gun as soon you get done huntting we have no idea if the gun has ben clean by a gun smith and checked ! if thiers a problem with gun and send it unloaded back to them most of the time they fix free! you pay the postage!

  • Sean April 22, 2012, 1:02 am

Like all of you, I am appalled and disgusted by the irresponsible reporting of NBC. As mentioned elsewhere, their so-called expert, as an engineer, has developed a safety that no one will buy. He is an opportunist and bastard, if you ask me. As far as the 19 year old that was shot by his own gun, after admitting to leaning the barrel of his gun against his truck fender, after leaving a round chambered, and after causing movement in the back of his truck, which could dislodge the aforementioned firearm, lo and behold, the gun falls over and goes off. The dumbass most likely didn’t even have the safety on. Either way, it’s negligence on his part, as he should have either unloaded the gun or at least open the chamber.

As far as objective reporting, it doesn’t exist. It never has and never will. Fox News appeals to our crowd because it suits our personal views more than other media outlets, but to say that they are more objective than any other network is just ignorant. I am a far cry from a liberal, should anyone accuse me of being so. I’m just a realist.

  • Donald Loes April 21, 2012, 9:42 pm

Isn’t this the same new network that fabricated the 911 call that Zimmerman made to make him look like a Racist.. Who the Hell pays attention to these Liberals at nbc anymore..

  • Will April 20, 2012, 11:16 pm

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what the problem is, the fact this “expert” they say that oh it’s flaw in the system blah blah blah. I’m gonna stamp a huge BS on his forehead. Remington’s come back on paper was probably the best, just because a few guns misfire doesn’t mean every gun they produce is flawed, also…THIS WAS A USERS POOR AND CARELESS HANDLING!!!!!!! They even said in the interview he put his gun in his truck and “threw” the rest of his gear on top of it causing it to “misfire” that is not just a problem with Remington, THAT IS A PROBLEM WITH EVERY GUN!!!! you put a round in the chamber and bang the gun against something you have a high chance of that fire arm going off, if he emptied the gun and then put it down, he wouldn’t of gotten hurt. My dad and grandfather taught me, when a gun is not in use or in storage never keep it loaded even if the safety is on. Just someone who didn’t know how to handle or respect the firearm

  • Chuck April 20, 2012, 5:27 pm

I am outraged, I am going to buy another 1100 today out of protest.Im really tired of people mishandling firearms and blaming the firearm itself.Thank you for running this article, now I know what not to watch on t.v.

    • Larry Tietz December 10, 2012, 11:54 am

Buy me one too. That’ll really show ’em.

  • Jim L April 20, 2012, 2:00 pm

I’ll make this short; responsibility for all the events above started with people not companies or network. It’s someone on a production line, at gun show knowingly passing on a problem or a group of people making policy behind closed doors. BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL YOUR ACTIONS, INCLUDING GOING ALONG WITH SOMEONE’S BAD IDEA AND ACCEPT THE NATURAL CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR CHOICES!
    5 SIMPLE RULES
    1. TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY ARE ALWAYS LOADED
    2. IF A GUN IS LOADED IT CAN GO OFF
    3. IF A GUN ISN’T LOADED IT CAN’T GO OFF
    4. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A IDIOT PROOF SAFETY
    5. SOMEWHERE THERE IS A NEW AND IMPROVED IDIOT

Integrity is what you have when you can get away with it but choose not to!

  • Bill April 20, 2012, 12:55 pm

I have had a Remington 870 my whole life and have never had a need to put the safety on.

How could you clean a loaded gun?
Why would you ever lean a gun on something with a round chambered?
And why would you ever allow the muzzle to cover something you did not want to destroy or could afford to replace.

Any of these negligent discharges could occur with any brand of gun.

  • Jeff April 20, 2012, 12:37 pm

What is the FIRST rule of pointing a gun? NEVER rely on a mechanical safety,TOO. In my department, there are NO accidental discharges, only NEGLIGENT discharges!

  • Ed Smith April 20, 2012, 6:25 am

I own 7 firearms . Two of which are remingtons (purchased within 1 year ) the remingtons were bought to teach my daughter to shoot model 597 22 cal ,and 870 shotgun . the same first guns i had at her age. After watching this story all instances are operator error . Remington go after them ! If for nothing else than slander.

  • Kyle April 20, 2012, 1:32 am

My generation has been brought up hearing nothing but pinko commie bull!#%&. I stopped watching NBC several years ago because I cannot abide lies on such a massive scale. It is like Michael Moore, because they manufacture dissent…they fabricate the truth and use the reputation that the generations of yesterday had worked so hard and honestly to build in order to mask the @$#! that flows from their mouths. I own three 870’s and a model 700 from 1969(a decade before I was born) that I still hunt with. I have never, never, had any kind of problem with any of them. I am an xMarine and we were taught 4 weapon safety rules, that amounted to just plain ol American common sense that I fear, or better yet I know, is going the way of the Dodo. I am 31 years old and when I take a look at my generation and the kids behind my generation I am physical ill. Stupidity has replaced what used to be intelligence as we are spoonfed lies from politicians who think that the masses are children who don’t know what is good for us. Be very wary of what you say, because Big Brother is watching. There is no turning back the clock and I weep for the future.

  • Mark April 20, 2012, 1:16 am

WHO IS BLAKE SHELTON? I NEVER HEARD OF HIM.

WHAT IS “THE VOICE”? I DON’T KNOW ANYONE THAT WATCHS IT.

I VAGUELY REMEMBER NBC AS ONE OF THE NETWORKS WE HAD TO WATCH WHEN THERE WERE ONLY 3. THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO AND WE HAVE A LOT OF OTHER (BETTER) CHOICES. WATCH SOMETHING HONEST OR ENTERTAINING, NOT A PROGRAM THAT TRYS TO BE BOTH BUT IS NEITHER.

  • Craig Odom April 19, 2012, 10:58 pm

I own 7 Remington 58 and 1100 shotguns a 5 fifles ,they have be well used over the past 42 years. For the people that say they jam, clean you guns because mine never have ,nor have they ever “gone off”.I work as a Paramedic and I have in the past been to and heard about “accidental shootings” never from a remington firearm just aiming itself at someone and firing, someone is always negligent ,not the gun.Why don’t NBC run a story on how many Americans that ILLEGAL ALLIENS kill in our country every year, not the 125 incidents they speak of here with gun accidents, I would think thousands of Americans killed in this country by someone that’s not supposed to be here.

  • Philip Godsey April 19, 2012, 8:57 pm

Wow, anybody want to take a step back, breath, and look at all this puffed up stuff your writing. Since when has freaking out solved a problem.
For those of you who feel that the weapons shouldn’t be loaded, do you know a cop who doesn’t leave their service weapon with a round in the chamber? The safety is there for a reason; if it doesn’t function, guess what it’s not.
How is NBC pandering to one group different than FOX news pandering to another. Both leave out facts and VERY important information. I don’t forgive them for it, but that’s also why I get my news from more reliable sources that are about delivering news, not infotainment. I guess I missed the part where the movie Red Dawn actually happened. Last time I checked the control of power in this country was still at very much a stalemate.
Also wondering how this Zimmerman enters into the equation, but since you went there…. If I can keep from shooting any idiot that gives me a reason out here in Portland, what’s his excuse? Let’s say it all went down like he said, he approached the situation completely wrong. If I had an inkling that somebody who may be a threat (packing heat or not) was in my general area, I would TAKE COVER and then draw. Why would you walk up to somebody and then harass them, much less leave your house and go look to start something. If he thought the good was no good, why not follow him? Geez, so easy to get sidetracked, I’m startin to see how you all manage to get sucked into it.
Either way, what happened to a good honest conversation without somebody yelling and screaming and accusing the person with the differing viewpoint of being an idiot or communist or nazi or (insert your favorite nemisis). What happened to reasoning (ya know that trait that used to be human), and what happened to the adults?

Thanks for lettin me have my turn.
    Never forget, everybody’s a hipocrite. 🙂

  • Frisbee April 19, 2012, 7:26 pm

I have owned and used a Remington Model 1100 since 1975 with no problems, accidental firings notwithstanding, as well as a Remington .221 Fireball, which though it has a very crisp trigger has, not unlike the Remington 1100, not gone off until I squeezed said trigger. The folks at NBC are looking for starting points to scare all their viewers into thinking how dangerous guns are. And, they are dangerous – and that is one reason bad governments don’t want them in the hands of their constituents – they are dangerous to the bad governments. Can anyone say, Hitler took the guns away and was very happy the day he did? Why don’t all these brave journalists admit they are lackluster, brain-dead water carriers who dislike Americans as much as the current administration in Washington. NBC, why aren’t you doing a decisive piece that starts out, “NOW you’re worried about the American worker, Mr. President? NOW, after all these years? NOW you’re in a hurry to make America independent again?” But, that would take guts, something these “journalists” sorely lack.

  • Asa Foley April 19, 2012, 7:08 pm

Fear gets more donations – is it possible all the second amendment fear preached by the NRA, GOP and others is just to raise more funds and sell more guns??? Nothing, and I mean nothing, now or anywhere in our current political system justifies all the fear preaching unless it is to get more donations. Nugent pushed me far from ever donating but I have to admit that I can find nothing that Obama has said or done that would suggest, hint or even make me suspect he is out to stop or hurt my right to own any gun. Just a thought before reacting, perhaps a moment of rational thought might be in order before you listen to those who preach fear to get a donation from you.

  • No Fortunate Son April 19, 2012, 6:54 pm

Wow. Guess they’ll have to do a piece on Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and EVERY other car manufacturer that had a car of theirs involved in the death of someone. Just because you operate a complex and sometimes deadly device/invention of man, that doesn’t mean your smart enough or cautious enough to do so. Firearms sales should probably include an IQ/un-common sense test along with a background check.

  • we the people April 19, 2012, 6:51 pm

Remington will have to stand up for their self if ruger would have years ago none of us would have locks on our pistols, rifles or shoguns Remington isn’t a small company, don’t get me wrong I have had a LOT! of Remingtons and still do but its not gonna go away if you just ignore the problem!…..Remington we support you by being loyal customers generation after generation now represent us as the Americans that made your company possible!

  • Brody April 19, 2012, 6:49 pm

He says he was going to BLOW THE OIL out of the barrel with the air compressor… HOW DID THE GUN GO OFF IF HE DIDN’T CHAMBER A ROUND. My point is that if you have cleaned and oiled a gun, there CANNOT BE A ROUND IN THE CHAMBER. This man would have had to; 1. replace the bolt(And In the shotguns case the barrel as well) 2. chamber a round 3. touch off the trigger. What person can clean a gun with the bolt closed, and never opening it to clear it. Also didn’t the old guy at hunters ed always say guns have a mind of there own so treat all guns as if they are loaded. Finally for the bounce discharge; any firearm with a modified trigger (especially to 2.5 lbs.) had better be ready for that gun to go off from even brushing it with a shirt sleeve.

  • Tom Belvin April 19, 2012, 5:41 pm

Any aircraft mechanics or owners out there will see the same story in what happened to the avaition industory.
Unfair lawsuits nearly killed the flying industry.

How many (blatant and intentional) lies/distortions/misrepresentatins does a reporter/commentator/host (i.e. Brian Willliams, et al) have to tell before he/she is recalled (read “fired”)? These leftist liberals are far more dangerous to us (and all Americans) than all of the firearms manufacturers and 2nd amendment organizations, who, in fact, protet us and preserve our safety and liberty. And practically every nation throughout history that has disarmed its citizens was taken over by tyrants and dictators. All you have to do is look at the nations of the world today in which the citizens are not allowed to possess firearms and see who governs them… That’s right – dictators, communists, socialists, and all manner of evil and oppressive regimes. How can even liberal Americans with unprecedented freedom be so blind and stupid?!?

  • Denny April 19, 2012, 5:27 pm

Remington has had some winners and some losers. I have had an 870 that performed flawlessly for years. I currently have two 1187’s that have performed flawlessly for years. I had an 1100 that had to be the worst semi-auto shotgun ever built. It would always eject a fired round, but NEVER feed another round into the chamber. I worked on it. My gunsmith worked on it, and it never worked. It was just a one-shot piece of junk. I currently have 6 Remington rifles that work fine, but my buddy has a Remington 700 that just goes off at will. It goes off being loaded, unloaded, and being carried. With the barrel next to your ear, that becomes discouraging.

First issue, what is the first rule of gun safety, never trust a gun safety. Everyone of these cases are a violation of the first rule of guns safety. Why most civilians end up shooting themselves. Stupidity! Sue the gun company because you’re an idiot. An American tradition.

  • Ernette April 19, 2012, 3:57 pm

I bought a used 20 gauge shot gun for my son when he was 12. We went through a 15 hour hunters safety course, practiced together, then went phesant hunting. As he came to the end of a field and began unloading his gun, it went off: into the dirt a few five in front of him. Shooting accidents are awful and gun companies should be (and are I believe) responsible for flaws in their products and gun owners should be, too. Grounding in Gun Safety 101 prevents accidents from becoming tragedy. The irresponsible love to use litigation to blame others for their mistakes.

  • David James April 19, 2012, 3:13 pm

What is one of the first things one should learn about handling a firearm ?
NEVER point a gun at anything you DON,T intend to shoot ! Wake up people SAFETY
always, I can count so many times people have amitted to making a discharge w/firearms
it aways seems the same, like after a great duck hunt a hunter of many years in his living room,
12 ga. pump unloaded gun then pulled the trigger, yeap BANG ! bricks blow out from fireplace,
lucky of three people in the room he did know the safty keep gun pointed upwards.
so many people pull triggers to see if gun is on safety. a million guns, not all can be perfect, if so they
could be making our automobiles. I have been hunting w/Remington arms sence the early 60,s and own
1100,s two 870,s two and yes it,s the best 700,s four of them.
Thanks Remington my # ONE Co.

  • ruauper2 April 19, 2012, 2:37 pm

Isn’t there just a trace of paranoia here on the part of NRA types? Every time the NRA or the arms companies become the focus of attention we hear nothing but claims “they” are taking away someone’s 2nd Amendment rights. They never tell us who “they” are, instead they use some nebulous term like bureaucrat, guv’ment, liberal, socialist or secret plot to describe the subversive evil doers out to take guns out of their hands.

    Get a life people!

If there truly is the sort of freedom of speech you claim for yourself would you mind terribly if I came to your church and delivered a sermon? That’s roughly the same as posting unmoderated comments on this forum.

I’ve run a blog and I appreciate that the moderator(s) of this forum go to the considerable effort it takes to keep it essentially spam free. But that requires that each post be examined before seeing the public eye.

We are going to have to re-call all sulfur activated matches. Because, if we drop one match, there is a possibility. That it could strike, go off and start a forest fire. If one match is drop indoors, it could cause the house to burn down. Sorry, just a little sarcasm to put on top of the stupidity, I am hearing from NBC. Back to guns kill people. Now, on the serious side. The right tool for the right job. I have many guns. I am a commisioned officer. When I go to work. I carry a 9mm Smith & Wesson or my .40 cal Smith & Wesson. I have a 12 guage pump shotgun. I use it if we do sweeps on drug infested apartment complexs. I have a .22 cal pistol for critters. Then I have a .38 Rossi that stays at home with my wife. The .38 cal Rossi is aways loaded and ready for protection at home. When I am at home. My 9mm Smith & Wesson is unloaded. But, with loaded clip sitting beside it. The rest of the guns are unloaded, they are not in use. If the bird hunter had finished hunting. Why, did he have his gun loaded and standing up against the cab of the truck ? (Human Error) The guy that was cleaning his rifle. And the gun went off and killed his wife. What ? Did he check the gun before he starting to clean it ? (Human Error) A person that purchases any name brand gun. If they have not been through a gun safety course. Should go through a gun safety course. If a person hasn’t had a gun safety course. Remington has instructions that come with their guns, the “Ten Commandments of Gun Safety”. If they had followed the instructions, enough said. I have grandchildren, a 16 yr. old and a 13 yr. old. I have given them a gun safety course. They know what to do if they come across a gun laying in a alley. Dont touch it, report it ! If possible, have someone watch the gun. While someone reports it. That’s if they have no cell phone. It could grow legs and run off. If one of their friends have a handgun or any fire arm in their possession. Report it ! I tell them, I would rather be none as a snitch.Than to sit by and hear about one of my friends getting shot on purpose or accidentally shot later. And usually, the frist thing out of the mouth of babes is, I DID NOT KNOW THE GUN WAS LOADED… I guess we are going to re-call all guns. Because, all the older revolvers fully loaded. If dropped and it strikes the hammer, it may discharge. Unless you are carrying it with hammer down on a empty chamber. But, no matter how much money gun supporters put into defending guns. No matter how many, signature’s we get together. All we do is prolong, what is to come reality. The government is in the process of unarming every american. The New World Order, it is closer than you think. Call that what you will ! The media (NBC,ABC,CBS,CNN etc.etc… they took a neighborhood watch person and a black juvenile and have turned it into a race war. The media has fed the fire on racism. It was a tragedy ! It is a tragedy, for any life to be lost ! But, what most the world over looked. Is what really was going on. THE ATTACK FROM THE MEDIA ON OUR AMERICAN LEGAL SYSTEM. There are different Law’s for different States in America. Some States, you can marry into same sex. When in others you cannot ! The break down in our country, is getting worse. And eventually, the inevitable is going to come. One World Government, MARSHALL LAW…you will by law have to give your guns up. Are as many Americans say, they will have to pry my cold dead fingers off the handle to take it ! But, now the media and my government can label me a terrorist. If they feel I’m a threat. But, I’m just a poor unpaid, preacher. That knows what is coming ! Galatians 3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

    • Shawn April 20, 2012, 3:33 am

I used a Remington 870 in the Army, great gun, no problems, every accident shown during their report was some moron not knowing what he was doing. In New York it’s illegal to lean a loaded gun against a truck, now we know why. I’m a gunsmith and an armorer on the 870 and the 1100, and the biggest problems I’ve seen with them is people not cleaning them. I’ve had them down to parts, including the trigger and safety, and if you don’t clean them, they will malfunction, as with any firearm. The design is sound and reliable, and they are used by law enforcement and the military for a reason. The accidents on the report are the reason I will only hunt or shoot with people who have served in the military. I don’t even trust law enforcement, not because they’re any worse, but they’re job is weapons 24/7 like a soldier or marine. Our lives revolve around our weapons, and one of mine was a Remington 870, and in 23 years never had an issue.

  • Wallybob April 19, 2012, 1:28 pm

I would like some medical expert to comment on the leg injury the hunter had. There are what appears to be leg damage to both his upper leg, as reported in the interview, plus damage in his calf area. With a shotgun loaded with BBs at a distance of at least 30 yards both the upper and lower leg could have been injured but that would only leave a bunch of small holes. I see no small holes between the thigh and calf. A close discharge would only hit one area of the leg. The injuries are long and narrow running parallel to the length of of his leg. A close range shotgun blast from a falling shotgun would leave a roundish injury in one place. The injuries looks very suspicious to me and similar to motorcycle accident damage when the rider slides down a road. And why did the doctors have to completely open his leg and connect the two injured areas with a cut? Could there have been multiple gun shots? Maybe this was a shotgun slug injury with it entering the thigh and exiting in the calf area. I shot a deer length wise once and it had long narrow injuries like that. Then that would beg the question of how a falling shotgun leaned against the truck could have hit him in the leg like that.

I would love to see FOX news do an in depth expose on “expert Tom Butters”. Would love to know the relationship between NBC and Tom Butters. I hope every proponent of the 2nd Amendment is clear on the motivation of this story. I do know if a Corporation challenges the all powerful “Media machine”, there will be consequences! Because in essence your are challenging the current government administration and their agenda, in this case the Gun Control Lobby. I am not sure if there is any correlation between this blatant “propaganda driven” story and the closing down of Remington Firearms in Illion, N.Y. for relocation from the Communist Empire State of New York to another State, that is happening or has happened this year. As every informed gun owner is aware of, President Obama’s regime will never attempt to physically take our guns. But this story is one of many that will come in the governments “back door” strategy for gun control. Extreme oppressive regulation which equates into high taxes, outrageous manufacturer production mandates, and the “discriminatory social propaganda” through media ads, comparable to the Tobacco industry and what big government has accomplished through the tax payers dime. Everyone knows the amount of money that big government has spent in their ads about the potential health risks by smoking. I guess soon the US regime will be mandating tobacco companies to display graphic images of cancer related photos on each pack of cigarettes, just as our Socialist neighbor Canada has done for years. I suggest to use the same amount of tax payer monies to support the prevention of H.I.V. and S.T.D.s, billboards, commercials, news commentary and on every pack of condoms, they could display A.I.D.S. related graphics. I do believe my suggestion would be taken when: HELL FREEZES OVER! Government is pushing harder and harder into our personal lives. We must always remember that soon some of us will be pushing back. I believe in the cliche: “Stand for something or fall for anything!”

In times like these, relatively small compnies could use an ally. How about some pro-2nd amendment lawyers offering their services pro-bono to go after NBC. How about offering their services for a reduced rate with the NRA or other pro-2nd amendment organizations picking up the rest. I am sure Colt, Smith and Ruger could have used the help. We have also heard from plenty of responsible, knowledgable people that can testify to the dependability and quality of the product. I would love to hear Ken, the Marine armorer, give his expert opinion in court. You can be outraged and boycott whatever you want. Remember that NBC is just the mouthpiece for a colossus of a corporation. You have to dig deep but you will find that your money finds its way into General Electrics pockets no matter what you buy. Hit them in the wallet. That is the winning strategy in every successfull military campaign. Its how Afghanistan managed to bankrupt the British Empire and the Soviets. The bigger problem is that most folks don’t care about any of this stuff. But they know who is on “Dancing with the Stars”. Sad….very sad.

Looks like NBC is loosing viewers and they just lost one more after reading some of the replys above I too am banning NBC. I will never watch them again. • loupgarous April 19, 2012, 11:59 am

This is only the latest in a series of journalistic frauds perpetrated by NBC News; not long ago, they edited a call between George Zimmerman and Sanford 911 to make it appear Zimmerman had uttered a racist remark, and we all should remember the explosive charges NBC placed next to a fuel tank on a Chevy pickup to make it appear that those trucks had an intrinsic safety problem. Between Brian Williams and NBC News’ political director Laurence O’Donnell, there’s a SEVERE objectivity problem at that network which has never been addressed (unlike CBS News, which at least fired Dan Rather when it was proven HE was slanting the news with his forged memos).

I don’t watch NBC, period. I don’t believe in supporting a network that wants to curtail my civil rights.

  • Lee Snyder April 19, 2012, 11:14 am

20 years ago NBC pulled the same stunt on General Motors. To support a story they were reporting on fuel tank fires in GM trucks, they rigged the truck’s fuel tank to explode. They had to do an on air apology. CBS & ABC slammed them. Hasn’t NBC learned anything?

  • Gary April 19, 2012, 11:11 am

That is what the press does. They only report the whole truth to follow their agenda! Especially NBC!

  • old6strings April 19, 2012, 10:59 am

Remington has a case against NBC but they are probably too smart to worry about crackpot journalism like that.
It was clearly a smear that didn’t work. I’m cutting off NBC and any company that advertises on them. In fact,
I’m pulling the plug on all TV, Direct TV will be picking up their crap and my house will be free from the junk that
it shows. Too few good shows, just not worth it. This one is an excellent example. Modern journalism has
an agenda, no desire to get to the facts, just bring in viewers. Do you think I’ll miss it? Not for a second. Better things to do.

  • Robin 'Roblimo' Miller April 19, 2012, 10:59 am

There is no “MSM” monopoly on news. I’m sure many people reading this comments page own decent camcorders and could produce their own YouTube videos demonstrating Remington firearms in use and not blowing up or going off on their own. If you’re in the Tampa – Sarasota part of Florida, I can shoot video of you and your Remington. Elsewhere, if you’re not good at making video you probably know someone who is.

I’m a liberal (in the classical sense) and a gun owner. I’m also one of the people who helped create citizen journalism — the idea that in today’s Internet world just about anyone can put out a story. The tools are out there. The skills? You can develop them. It’s harder to produce decent-looking video than it is to type, but nothing you can’t learn.

Complaining about NBC may be fun. but if you seriously want to challenge them on facts, stop whining and DO IT!

    • Tom Ross April 19, 2012, 3:08 pm

Refreshing comment. I’m a liberal, too, and a gun owner who loves the shooting sports. Was born and raised around them, my father being a Korean War veteran and sharpshooter. He’s liberal, too, but at 79 can still put others to shame at the range. I cringed when reading many of these comments, attacking liberals like me, Obama (who has done nothing to infringe on my rights, or yours, to own a gun) and making sweeping generalizations and going on and on about nonsensical conspiracies … I could say the same about Fox News, but won’t waste my breath.

      • JP April 21, 2012, 10:32 pm

        Dear Mr. Ross:

Can’t you even see through the “Fast and Furious” plot. Re-elect Obama and see what he and Holder do to your “gun owner” status as a “liberal” in his second term.

      • Bill1952 April 20, 2013, 2:45 pm

Tom … I am writing this almost exactly a year after your original post. Given the events in Congress of the past few months and Obama’s remarks concerning the defeat of the current gun control legislation (more is promised in the near future), I wonder if you are of the same opinion regarding Obama now as you were last year.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then and masks have been dropped. Since Obama wasn’t able to get the gun control act passed by Congress, he has promised to make it the subject of an Executive Order. How do you feel now about Obama’s intentions regarding gun ownership?

  • steve April 19, 2012, 10:33 am

I will go out today and buy a Remington shotgun and NEVER watch NBC again for anything as well!! I will also call the company and tell them how much I support them….God Bless Remington!!

  • Gobbler 111 April 19, 2012, 10:32 am

I own or have previously owned 5 Remington Model 700 rifles in various calibers in the past 42 years. Every one of them performed flawlessly and they were subject to hunting in extremely cold, wet, snowy conditions when most mechanical objects fail! I also own or have previously owned 10 Remington 870 and 11-87 shotguns. Every one of them has been perfect as well. How sad it is when a great company is blatantly discredited by the media. Isn’t this the same network that crucified Toyota? SHAME ON YOU NBC!!!!! I’m done watching your BULL****!! By the way, where can I sign up for the class that will teach me how to clean my firearm without even having to unload it??? I must have slept through that class in both the civilian and military classes. Sure could have saved some precious moments in Vietnam! REMINGTON, HOLD YOUR HEAD HIGH.

  • Terry April 19, 2012, 10:31 am

    Hello ;
I have had Remington arms all my life and i have never had one go off in this manner. This is a crock that NBS is trying to smear Remingtons name by being stupid about it. If your reckless with a firearm yeah it could go off but who’s fault is that other than the person being reckless. That’s like people wanting gun control wake up people i have never saw a gun discharge by itself without someone helping it and if it does then its that person own fault for not getting it repaired. Guns don’t kill people do so stop blaming gun companies for one persons neglect. a weapon has to be maintained like your car if u don’t then things can happen who fault is that not the gun companies.

  • Charlie Wiggins April 19, 2012, 10:21 am

Every SAFE hunter knows that you do not transport a loaded weapon of any description in a vehicle. Really NBC, you can’t fix stupid. The arms market is full of appropriate weapon carrying devices. But NONE of the weapons in them should be loaded. Look in a police cruiser and see how their tactical weapons, including shotguns are carried. I bet you won’t see one just laying on the seat or “proped up against the vehicle in any manner.

  • Kinberpro April 19, 2012, 9:54 am

As you all have seen in the general media for the past three years, especially with Travon Martin, the assassins in Oklahoma, the press embellishes the story, gives half truths, partial quotes to force the targeted person to have to prove innocence. In the media everyone is guilty until proven innocent(Except for Obama and the secret service), especially if it is associated with our conservatives liberties. I had a grade school teacher back in the 60’s who stated, “Don’t believe anything your hear and only half what you see”. I always keep that in mind with all the media. And to have Obama weigh in with comment, how un-presidential!! I fully expect him to have some comment to this story…

  • Allen Benge April 19, 2012, 9:35 am

While I personally don’t care for the Remington 870 shotgun, I know it to be a decent firearm, used as it is by police agencies and the military. My opinion of preferring the M Ossberg 500 over the remington has n othing to do with the NBC hit piece. In the Yerger case, Yerger should kn ow better than to rest a shotgun against qa truck or anything else. The weapon should be either unloaded or placed only in a solid, steady position. Butter and Belk are ‘hired guns’ (no pun intended) That make thier living testifying against gun makers, and NBC is criminally ingenuous in using them, as they have been shown to be dishonest, and willing to lie in court to fill their pockets. NBC is off my tv tuner for good. Never, ever trust a mechanical safety, the best safety in the world is an educate, conscientious shooter.

  • JP April 19, 2012, 9:26 am

This guy is an idiot. After hearing his story wherein he relates that he did “nothing wrong” I have a couple of questions:

    1. If he was dove hunting why was he loading a deer in the back of his truck?
    2. If he was done hunting why did he lean a loaded gun against the side of his truck?

  • Matt April 19, 2012, 9:15 am

Once again Obama’s network FAILS. It did take a gun blog to point out that it was even on TV, so maybe not too many people actually watched it. Maybe those who are now too scared to keep one will sell them? Real gun guys who know how to safely handle firearms will be able to pick up a slightly used and very safe Remington rifle or shotgun for cheap. I say its a win-win situation.
…I am being a bit sarcastic here btw, so save the speeches please. Bottom line, the guy was not practicing safe firearms handling, they couldn’t really get the gun to go off without doing something over the top to make it happen, and no one really watches NBC, MSNBC, or CNBC. Remington has been around forever and millions of their guns are in the hands of people who know how to use them properly. Yes Remington should sue NBC…that would be awesome.

  • Tom April 19, 2012, 9:13 am

What about contacting all of nbc’s (intentionally left lower case) sponsors and let them know there’s a boycott that will happen because of nbc’s lying ways? A retraction is required and we must demand that. So, let’s start contacting all those companies and let the media outlets know about all this b.s. that is continuing with nbc. You’d think they’d want to avoid doing the Treyvon Martin thing all over again, and being called on it. We need to make a fuss over this. We need to ask Remington to sue. I wonder if we can sue nbc over emotional distress for making us worry about our shotguns?

    • Administrator April 19, 2012, 9:57 am

Because there isn’t a boycott. Nobody stands up for anything anymore and they all know that. Everyone is too busy with video games and cell phones to care about anything.

  • Joe April 19, 2012, 9:08 am

Guns are mechanical in nature, so they can fail, however, usually, it is due to wear and/or neglect. They usually fail in shore notice if they are defective. Remington should take them on and stand their ground. I’ve owned and still own several 1100s and 870s, starting back in the mid to late 70s, hunted with them extensively, had them sitting in the bottom of a boat, often an airboat, loaded most of the time, and have not had any of them improperly fire. If you would have seen what they went through, if there was a wide scale defect, then more than likely, I would have seen it. Likewise, they were carried through some very rough hunting grounds, dropped and thrown in the back of 4×4 trucks, so from my experience, the gun design is solid. It is a regretable situation when a person gets shot, however, in fairness, the individual should be questioned as to what truthfully happened….

  • Cory April 19, 2012, 9:08 am

NBC is garbage but that is old news to me, I don’t watch anyting on NBC not even “The Voice” Blake should remove himself from the show to make a statement, an action people can look up to. • Ken April 19, 2012, 8:48 am

I was a USMC armorer and later an OrdO. In my career, I’ve worked on countless Remington Model 870 shotguns. I can tell you from experience repairing these shotguns that there is no harder use for a gun than giving it to a Marine. I’ve repaired or coded 870’s that have been crushed, shattered, dropped, submerged, abused, beaten on, run over, used for Breacher training, crowd control, been through CQB training/combat and some of the hardest use you can imagine and have never had a CFC that spontaneously or sympathetically disengaged the hammer from the sear. This is not to say there are not preventive maintenance procedures in place to detect insipient failures by the means of a trigger pull weight test. None the less, even with the weakest hammer spring or sear spring or disconnector, I’ve never had one disengage without the trigger being pulled and the safety off. As far as the Remington 700 trigger problems go, most of the problems the Marines have encountered with the triggers were a result of the receivers being worn to a point where the firing pin assembly would barely engage the sear or not at all resulting in a “Slam Fire” condition. This had nothing to do with the trigger mechanisms but was a direct result of being fired tens of thousands of times over a 35 year period and dry fired as many times (M40A1). I doubt seriously if there are many Remington 700 actions in the civilian world that have that many rounds fired through them. I’d also like to point out that the majority of Remington 700 trigger problems I’ve encountered were not associated to worn out receivers but as a result of kitchen table gunsmiths that want a “Nicer” trigger and have tinkered with the weight and over travel set screws. Improper adjustment of these set screws will result in a “Slam Fire” or an unpredictably light trigger. Both causes are life threatening and entirely the responsibility of the operator.

    Ken

    • Mr Greenjeans April 19, 2012, 9:02 am

Thank you Ken. It’s refreshing to hear a true expert’s take on these thinly veiled, 2nd Amendment hit pieces. I had been considering a Remington 700 until last night but now that I’ve heard your take, I’ll definitely get one.
I do have a question on the ‘supposed’ military & sniper school ‘self-firing’ situations portrayed in CNBC’s video when the prone shooter (with his face obscured) call no fire, then touched the bolt or disengaged the safety to cause discharge…has this occurred and if so, could this also be the result of ‘touching up’ the trigger?

      G

      • Ken April 19, 2012, 11:16 am

The problem is most encountered in older Remington 700 actions that have had tens of thousands of rounds fired through them (military sniper rifles). The receiver boltways wear every time the bolt is opened or closed; metal on metal contact. Over time, the boltways wear enough that the bolt becomes sloppy in the receiver. The sear has constant pressure on the firing pin mechanism and this pushes the back end of the bolt up, causing light contact or none at all of the sear/firing pin mech, hence slam fire or “self firing”. There are receiver go, no-go gages avalable to gage for this defect but are almost never needed unless the gun has been fired as much as previuosly stated. You will never encounter this problem on your Remington 700. Ken

  • Chuck April 19, 2012, 8:42 am

It has been known to the thinking man for quite some time that NBC is deep in the tank for the left and Obama.

  • Mr Greenjeans April 19, 2012, 8:40 am

Wow! Strange coincidence…just before going to bed last night, I scanned NetFlix and saw a ‘Recommended For’ show on how dangerous the Remington 700 series of rifles are, produced by CNBC. I know everyone else has probably seen it but it was a first for me since I don’t watch their network. Although I’ve been shooting since 1964, tours in the Air Force and Army, worked for a Class 3 dealer in Wichita during the 1970’s, I’ve never shot a Rem 700. For those of you who have seen it and/or have used that weapon, please let me know your thoughts on it and CNBC’s allegations.
I think that system of networks (NBC, CNBC, MSNBC) should change their base acronym to N-BS.
    Thank you.

    • Greg April 19, 2012, 8:56 am

The 700 triggers did have safety issues. I replace all that come in with the Walker triggers using one of the good aftermarket ones. They have since replaced the design with a good one, but there are many out there that need replacing. http://www.gunsmiths.com/articledetail.php?id=87 The shotgun attack is totally frivolous and NBC (& their advertisers) should be avoided by all the shooting community.

      • Scott Mayer April 19, 2012, 10:25 am

The Model 700 trigger issue was sensationalized and aired specifically for political purposes.

NBC, CNBC and MSNBC trots out Remington and whips it like this every time there is an election and the Democrats look like they’re in trouble. It’s simply a tool for the DNC to fire up the base so they will get out and vote. They did the Model 700 hit job during the Clinton administration either during the mid-term election when Republicans won Congress or it might have been during the “assault weapon” ban debate, and they’re doing it again now that it looks sketchy at best for Obama to get re-elected.

No sense in telling NBC, CNBC or MSNBC that they’re bad for doing this–this is what they do. Instead, you go after their paying sponsors and explain nicely that you consider the NBC group dishonest. Point out this, the Treyvon Martin tapes, and don’t forget when they rigged Chevy trucks to explode. Explain to those sponsors that you must consider them dishonest by association, will not do business with them, and will advise your family, friends and associates not to do business with them.

        Dear [company],
Thank you for taking the time to read my concern. You are a paying sponsor on [NBC, CNBC, and/or MSNBC]. This media outlet has intentionally rigged Chevy trucks to explode, aired false information about Remington, and has manipulated 911 tapes in the Treyvon Martin case. This is a pattern of dishonesty, and you have chosen to financially support that dishonesty. I am choosing not to buy your products or hire your service so long as you support dishonest business. I will also ask my friends and family to not do business with you. If you choose to no longer support dishonest business, I will reconsider doing business with you.
        Cordially,
        [name]

I don’t mean to trivialize anyones misfortune in connection to this story and the use of ANY firearms, but according to the reporter, Remington has tens of millions of guns out there…..The number of reported accidental discharges is pretty damned low considering that total mentioned…And in the manufacturing business, all products are inspected for “quality control”….even the “BEST” manufacturer in the “World” could never hope for such a low “quality control” number…it figures to 0.000014%…..And if you factor in carelessness or neglegence in the handling of these firearms the number gets even lower…Thats a pretty impressively LOW factor…. something for Remington to be Proud of…..

  • Thomas Covey April 19, 2012, 8:20 am

What does anyone that watches the so called news but paid for junk science and the stooges they hire to validate their claims . Anyone should know the only truth this bunch can put forth. Is their own slanted perception of the facts. These people only tell less than half the story. Go shoot your Remington you will get more from this. Than wasting time watching what these idiots call NEWS!

  • Chris Baker April 19, 2012, 8:18 am

I don’t understand your reluctance to boycott NBC, or any other company that hates what you do and is dishonest about reporting anything. I have boycotted NBC since I found out about them installing model rocket motors on GMC trucks to make sure they got a huge fireball when the trucks were impacted from the side, this must have been 30 years ago. I have seen enough of their reporting to know that they haven’t changed. They are dishonest and dishonorable and I refuse to support anything they show even to the point of supporting their commercial in the article above. You should consider doing likewise. Watching NBC, any of their programs, is like kissing a pretty girl or a handsome guy, who has an SDS. Yes he/she’s pretty but you can get something nasty from kissing him/her. Far better to get him/her (NBC) to a doctor and get him/her cleaned up. Can’t clean up NBC if you support them.

    • bill April 20, 2012, 11:57 am

again don’t boycott them. it’s much more effective to write to the sponsors and tell them of your concerns with truthful ness and bias at the network.

  • Paul W. Culpepper April 19, 2012, 8:10 am

I need the e-mail address and physical address of Remington Firearms.

I intend to send them some money to encourage a lawsuit against NBC.

The time is NOW to reclaim our Nation, our freedoms, and our rights are conservative Americans.

    • Pooter April 19, 2012, 10:25 am

      RIGHT ON BROTHER!!!!!!

  • George April 19, 2012, 7:58 am

It dosen’t surprise me that NBC would do this kind of hit piece on Remington. The offer for” news” altered 911 tapes, they continue to report half and less than half truths on behalf of the present administration. Why wouldn’t they lie about this also. They were very careful to claim not to be anti gun but only again give us half the information that would lead us to speculate their story is right. I have absolutely no trust in anything NBC reports as news. I find them and the other two aledged broadcast news departments as progressive propaganda outlets not news as news stations report facts and let you make up your own mind not try t o make up your mind for you.

  • Randall Richard Jordan April 19, 2012, 7:56 am

As there were only re reuns on the History and Discovery channels that night, I happened to see the NBC “report”
on Remington’s shotguns the night it was aired. I found it so biased and comical that I brought the show to the attention of my wife, a non gunner, who was also appalled by the outright lies and political editing of the show. The part which got me the most was the twice convicted murderer who claimed the Remington killed his wife, not him. What a crock of ****.We proceeded to tear the rest of the show apart, witness by witness, and actually found their “expert witness” quite laughable. He’s really quite an ass. The political overtones of NBC’s attack on the Second Amendment and Remington firearms was so apparent that the show should have been required to publish a political flyer at the end.Rather than boycotting NBC, Americans should watch drivel such as this so they can inform other people of the obserdity of shows such as this, and keep their neighbors informed of the misinformation being published by the media. Being a hunter and sportsmen for over 50 years I have never had a CFC failure in any of my Remingtons. Of course I have never been stupid enough to clean a loaded shotgun with an air compressor while pointing it a my wife either, as stated by the convicted murderer in this rediculous show. As a matter of fact, there were times I wish my shotguns had malfunctioned,as I can’t count the numbers of birds I missed while hunting, because I forgot to take the safety off.Guns don’t kill people, people kill people and stupidity will kill you quicker than anything. Please allow NBC to keep on being stupid and underestimating the intelligence of the American people. And before the liberals jump on my past, Yes, I’m a baby burning Viet Nam Vet who still kills his dinner.

    • bill April 20, 2012, 11:54 am

this is true about remington guns. i have had quite a few remingtons shotguns over the last 50 years. some of them made in the 30s and never had a misfire . the only problem i ever had was a broken pickle fork in my 1100 skeet. which was replaced and is being used today. i shot trap, skeet and clays since the 70s using 500 to 1000 rounds a week and NEVER had a malfunction discharge.nbc is a tool for the LYING MUSLIM in the white house and his traitor secretary of state clinton and house boy holder

      • john hall April 21, 2012, 10:13 am

You hit the nail on the head,Bill

      • Alan April 29, 2012, 11:36 pm

Honestly, Bill, does it really matter what the man’s religion is? If federal government operations were held to only those activities authorized by the Constitution, then what difference does his religion make? That’s like blaming drugs for an addict stealing. It’s the theft that’s wrong, not the reason for doing it.

        • Bill1952 April 20, 2013, 2:27 pm

The only reason I care about his religion is that he apparently lied about that on the way to getting elected. That’s just one more lie to add to the stack.

I’m gonna miss that guy … the sooner the better.

  • Fred April 19, 2012, 7:37 am

Quit watching them. How hard is that? They have nothing to offer anyway, any of them.
Boycott the MSM. Your IQ will go up.

    MOLON LABE

    • Mike April 19, 2012, 5:05 pm

Don’t boycott! Boycotting is something you do when you actually have a true need to consume it and temporarily stop. Progressive Libtards try that all the time. Doesn’t work.
      Just don’t consume it!

      • bill April 20, 2012, 11:45 am

i agree don’t boycott but do write to the sponsors and tell them of your concerns re. nbc bias and false reporting. that is the best way to take action.

    • bill April 20, 2012, 11:44 am

the ONLY good program on nbc is Grimm and i wish it would move to the syfy network

  • John April 19, 2012, 7:30 am

I saw this story. It’s just a rehash of the same BS story that has been airing on MSNBC on and off for a year or more. On MSNBC they play it like an infomercial. This story has been thoroughly debunked before but of course that will never be revealed by the mainstream media. I for one don’t watch NBC partially because of their politics and the rest because their programming sucks. I find better programming on other cable networks besides the big 3.

    • Joe April 19, 2012, 8:49 am

You’re right, John, their programming sucks. I wouldn’t miss this channel at all.

  • Bill April 19, 2012, 7:25 am

NBC has been at the forefront of the ultra left media blitz for years. It is time we had a government truth watchdog over the media. Just because we have freedom of speech does not mean you can shout fire in a crowded theater, nor does it mean you can put out propaganda on a daily basis disguised as truth.

    • major April 19, 2012, 11:17 am

Please , no more gov. Czars.

    • Alan April 29, 2012, 11:29 pm

Terrible idea, Bill. Just terrible. The proper way in a *free* country such as ours, is to petition NBC, and inform those companies advertising during this sort of programming that you are boycotting them as well until the situation is rectified. Government involvement is sure to make matters worse.

Propaganda is bad, but free people can identify it for what it is. In the words of Thomas Jefferson, “It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand for itself.”

      • Bill1952 April 20, 2013, 2:21 pm

Actually, if they have no ‘unspun’ news to contrast it to, they CAN’T distinguish propaganda from truth.

The MSM have to play footsie to a certain extent in order to get their licenses renewed. They are part of larger corporations that control print, radio and television … often the same company effectively dominates entire markets. So, even if someone is trying to inform themselves about an issue, many of the avenues present the same basic information from the same general viewpoint.

Case in point … find a pro-gun / pro-2A “investigative report”. There are next to no reports of successful defensive use of firearms and exactly zero reports supporting the original reason for the simple existence of the Second Amendment.

Only by diligent digging at the library and through the internet (with conscientious cross checking of facts) can someone come to an accurate understanding of current events and historical trends.

And who has the time for that?

  • William Fannin April 19, 2012, 7:23 am

How many skateboard users have been injured using the device? 100%? How many have been killed or left brain dead? I don’t see a rush to have them recalled or banned. Why? PURE PREJUDICE. People always accept responsibility for the things they love, but want to cause problems for the things they dislike.

  • Larry Berry April 19, 2012, 7:13 am

I’m Not suprised at anything That NBC or any of the other news Media, ABC, MSNBC, CBS, etc. They are All Liberal
in their Views. The only News I watch is FOX who in My Opinion is Very Fair & unbalanced .

  • Tommy April 19, 2012, 7:06 am

The MSM has never been one to confuse the issue with the facts. They have lost all credibility in my opinion and now belong in the same “NEWS” category as the National Enquirer.

      Haa! you nailed it.

      • bill April 20, 2012, 11:41 am

we should never believe nbc for anything truthful

  • tarawa1943 April 19, 2012, 6:32 am

Did this negligent hunter ever take a hunter safety course?

    • Hooch April 19, 2012, 1:58 pm

Yes it’s unfortunate, but you are correct. The gun should never have been placed into the bed of the truck while cocked and loaded. I do believe his story of the gun accidently going off after falling while cocked and loaded, but I would believe that story of any gun. There may or may not be a problem with the common fire control, but it’s not Remington’s fault that gun was mishandled.

  • tarawa1943 April 19, 2012, 6:29 am

Pure criminal extortion, all guns are loaded all the time, period NEVER NEVER trust a mechanical device over human due diligent safety actions! Sorry to see the negligent unskilled hunter get shot but this is another deception of the entitlement thinking from the puke generation! This fool is trying to get money out of an honest company and NBC puke politics is willing to help! APOLOGIZE TO REMINGTON NOW! UNLOAD THE GUN IF NOT IN THE FIELD!

    • Chris Baker April 19, 2012, 8:21 am

An unloaded gun is simply a very expensive rock or club. Keep them loaded and handy. Keep plenty of spare ammunition handy too.

      • Dale Zylman April 19, 2012, 8:31 am

        Ditto!

        • Phillip Ley April 19, 2012, 11:52 am

And I agree that NBC was grossly irresponsible as well….

        • bill April 20, 2012, 11:39 am

          100% agreement here also

      • Phillip Ley April 19, 2012, 11:50 am

I disagree, partly. Really no reason to have any ammunition in the weapon at that point, but loaded with a round chambered is the mistake. No problem with the gun having rounds in the magazine, technically, if you are responsible and diligent. Apparently this man was not. Irresponsible to have one in the chamber preparing to load the weapon into your vehicle. I have shot competitively and hunted for forty-five years, and I NEVER travel or leave the field with a round chambered. Our world is dangerous, of course, but he was not in an environment where hostile threats were in the immediate vicinity, necessitating a loaded magazine.

      • Bill1952 April 20, 2013, 2:07 pm

I agree with you so far as a personal defense weapon goes, but a gun kept for hunting should be loaded shortly before use and unloaded shortly afterward. And there is never any excuse for cleaning a gun not definitely known to be unloaded. The breech must be opened and the chamber visually and manually checked. Anything less is criminal negligence.

Anyone who shoots themselves or others has shown poor muzzle control.

    • William April 23, 2012, 12:32 pm

I agree with Chris..An unloaded gun is no use at all when you need it..BUT, if you have an automatic or pump shotgun, you don’t have to have one in the chamber
Besides, the sound of jacking a shell into the chamber of a pump would make a wannabe bad guy piss his pants

  • JOE RICHARDSON April 19, 2012, 5:50 am

I will never watch NBC again for anything…

    • Mike April 19, 2012, 8:19 am

I was taught never say never it can bit you in the ass. But I’ll bet you’ll give it a good shot. Networks will do or say almost anything to make money.

    • Gary April 19, 2012, 12:52 pm

Well I hate to differ with you all but Remington is far from being the so called best gun ever….
They have a convenient way of never disclosing to the consumer any particular consistant problems they might be having with a particular model of several guns.

Let me give you a few good for examples Remington had, Start with the 501cti shotgun, gorgeous looking shotgun, all kinds of graphite composite used in it ,, I paid $1,050.00 plus tax for mine. They sell for $1,200.00 or so now but the question is they may sell for more why don’t they work ??
Low and behold because I had been sick for months ( I was fighting lung cancer doing chemo and radiation and all of that ugly stuff and did not have the chance to really crank some rounds through it immediately after I got it) I was reading “Gun Tests” out of three shotguns rated the 501 was given a “E” for performance and rated “Don’t Buy” because it was a maintenance hog…
I called Remington and after getting through the office women on the phone I talked to a gunny, he said “as we are talking I am writing up a pick-up tag”, which he did and I had the gun picked up quickly with in about a week.
( We have a terrible Gun dealer in my town Fenton , MI) who refused to help me with the warranty even thought I bought it from him)
After waiting over 6 weeks and calling many times ( the office women were doing their best to block me from talking to the Gunny, I finally reached him.

He was short and to the point, he said mail me a copy of your receipt and I will issue you a full refund.
The gun is junk and we have discontinuded it will not work especially in foul weather., It will start jamming after firing only about a box of shells it then has to be cleaned.

Now the only problem is why didn’t Remington put the word out that this gun was a loser?? I called Cabela’s ( I would never do business with them because of the following) I told them that they had a half dozen of these gun for sale on the internet being sold by their different internet stores across America and that Remington would issue refunds on these guns before a consumer got stuck with one. If they didn’t know it could be replaced and either dumped it for a cheap price or paid some Gunny to repair it.
That Guys is not good service or even good OLE American customer care & Quality , ( You know just like they have done with the Remington 700. One loss of life from a defective safety is to many.
Unless you think that human life means nothing even if it’s the many lives that have been documented on the TV program on hour long Remington and you can bet Remington did not sue this Gunny for talking about them refusing to pay 6 cents on a spring to do the safety right..

Everyone gets angry if their car doesn’t work and the Fed’s make em do recall’s what is the problem with Remington and their Product Quality?? I have written them several times and they have never cared enough to write me back and also offered no aploogy for the defective 501…

Moving on My buddy had a Remington 750 Woodsman, This thing would not hold a 3 shot group at 25 yards or a 100 yards, and jammed up like a mother, we fed it every ammo known to man and it still jammed.
My buddy sent it back in 3 times, missed a hunting season( he used his good old Winchestrer 30 yrs old to get his deer) because of their piss poor service (they had it a total of over 5 months through the ordeal) and never fixed it.
He offed it at a gun show and took a loss, so Remington seems to be drawing a pattern.

Finally I bought a new 1100 , Loved it except that damn thing jammed also, it would not fire any ammo for more than two or 3 loads without jamming… I called, emailed, you name it no answer, Some poor sucker has it now and I know he is sorry her bought it. Glad I will never see him again.

I would not buy a Remington product now for any reason, even if it were for my worse friend to make them mad…..
.Remington is also handling Marlin now, OMG go look at one, The entry level lever action rife is $350.00 to $450.00 or so, It’s stamped parts, The throw on the lever action is a joke it’s a double long throw and is junk, I know it’s made in some foreign Country like most Companies are doing now but Never Ever would I buy one and I tell people what I have told you here.

I cherish my old 870 and the ones I have bought for my son’s over the past 30 years (nothing recent) they have had a zillion rounds through them as we used them both as a shotgun and slug gun , Thank goodness we have kept them………They are both sadly it appears the end of a ERA,
Remington had big money and the opinion of some little turd like me means nothing to them, but they won’t get any more change from myself, my family and our friend ever again.
Either build it right or admit you made a mistake Reminton or in a few decades you will have the reputation of GM which is building junk and has been for 30 yrs or more, I live in the largest GM town in America and 9 Auto Factories are torn down and the city is a Ghetto because there is no work but for one reason.
People got sick of buying junk. The workers here knew they were building junk just like Remington but didn’t care, they liked those $30.00 a hour + paychecks and perks, forget Quality & Service

You will get what you are paying for with the NEW Remington’s & Marlin’s……Go to another Manufacturer…..because if you buy on, the only way out of the purchase is to take a loss and dump it and get really pissed off or if it’s a 700 maybe real dead.

      • Mike April 19, 2012, 5:00 pm

I do send my condolences and best wishes to you for your health issues. I can understand why you value life more than an ordinary healthy person that has no context with which to appreciate it. BUT>>>>

What the heck are you smokin now? When GM or Toyota have a particularly poor quality product (general mills too, GE you fill in the blank) they don’t make press releases that say “Hey! Look everyone we have a crap product that we plan to replace next year”. No. You DO hear from them when there are Public Safety and Health issues. You should be thankful when products ARE discontinued or improved.

A poor cycling inaccurate piece does not rise to the level of “telling everyone” like you expect. These are not life threatening issues (the subject of this article) unless the targets you’re trying to hit at 75 and 100yds are going to attack you with supersonic speed. 😉

I do believe you should expect better CS than you have claimed to have received from Remmy. So should you, apologize for selling that POS 501c (your claim) to someone and then say i” hope to never see him again”. wow. NICE! You are no better than Remmy! You may need another kind of therapy. Didn’t you say …. my son’s 870’s or….wait for it “I cherish my 870. That’s a Remington isn’t it?

        God Bless and God speed.

      • Dan April 19, 2012, 10:30 pm

Funny how you seem to think it is not ethical for Remington to sell a faulty product but you do the same by sticking some unsuspecting buyer with a faulty product. I owned and operated a gun shop
for 12 years and I found that there are a few people like you that want to stick someone with a faulty firearm yet think nothing of it. Better look in a mirror buddy.

        • Steve April 23, 2012, 12:00 pm

He didn’t do anything wrong? How about violating safety rule No. 1?? – UNLOAD YOUR FIREARM WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED SHOOTING. He left a round in the chamber. Period. If he hadn’t, with or without this supposed and UNPROVEN flaw, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Period.

      • Joe McHugh December 10, 2012, 7:49 am

Mike, you are right about describing Gary’s expectations as unrealistic. However, Remington and GM for that matter, are still failing in a big way. Both companies are not delighting the customer. When any company makes a product that does not live up to its promise to the customer, (via advertising), it should offer to fix the problem in a timely manner or offer an immediate refund for the product.
If they can not do this they are not only losing repeat business but they are stealing money from the customer. There is simply no other way to describe a company that treats a customer in such shameful ways.
All products and service are sometimes subject to failure due to human error. Never the less, the mark of a great company is to honor its warranty when the occasional failure occurs. The company that fails in this respect doesn’t deserve to survive; and guess what? They eventually fail.
The people who operate a large or small company know this but they sometimes lose sight of who runs the show, the customer.

      • Robert December 10, 2012, 8:49 am

Poor accuracy from one fire arm has absolutely nothing to do with a claimed “safety issue” on a another. The fact that you dumped a “failed/defective” unit on some unsuspecting soul speaks volumes of who you are and where your true character lies. The odds that a defective weapon & or design can make it to the market are pretty good, the market will generally sift out the true riff-raft on its own. While I am not a huge Remington fan by any means, I cannot refuse to accept the fact that there are millions of satisfied Remington customers out there.
Out of several shotguns, including one 870, I think I’ll keep mine.

    • Tom December 10, 2012, 7:54 pm

NBC is bias due to not showing the full report of the independent inspector. Anything to be anti-gun.

Send this to a friend
