Strike First: 7 Keys To Surviving Imminent Violence

Authors S.H. Blannelberry

From Funker Tactical, “Effective preemptive striking can save your life when a violent confrontation is imminent. In this Krav Maga tutorial video, Ryan Hoover from Fit-To-Fight Krav Maga explores the 7 key points to surviving a serious fight by throwing the first punch.”

Strike first aka anticipatory self-defense. Isn’t that a Bush administration tenet? Knock the hell out of them before they knock the hell out of you.

In any event, I’d just add that one should be mindful of the legal repercussions of striking first. It obviously puts one behind the 8 ball in court. Words getting exchanged is one thing, but when fists start to fly the police and the prosecutor typically want to know who swung first. But hell, if you’re life is on the line, better to be judge by 12 than carried by six.

I had a chap offer violence once and after quickly running the options in my head, I concluded for my safety, a ten rapid combo of uppercuts, left and right hooks followed by the coup de grace of a full on punch to the bridge of the nose was enough to open him up like a duffel bag and allow me to leave the scene. I found out sometime later when attending court that he had a previous conviction for attacking a taxi driver with an iron bar causing him severe injury.
In court I was asked if I had meant to cause so much injury and I said most definitely, I can’t risk getting into a fight with an unknown quantity. My aim was to finish that fight as quickly as possible and get away. Luckily I dodged a conviction. It was either that or I would have taken a beating for sure that day. That’s the risk.
