Description: The J.P. Sauer & Sohn shotgun is a 12 ga. Double barrel hammer sidelock model with steel barrels. The trigger guard and hinge plate (at attachment of barrel to frame) both bear the number 3447. Additional proof marks are as noted: Imperial Eagle to the right of “NITRO” on each barrel 12, 12 in circle on underside of each barrel Crown above W w/ Imperial eagle on right side Crown above S w/ Imperial eagle on right side Crown above U w/ Imperial eagle on right side Crown above V “NIGHT FUR NUGEL” (not for slugs) on left barrel 49239 above 1003C on left barrel PAP P.12-65.5, 75 SP.34,5 BL w/ 8 laying on its side above the L and a T at approximately 60 degrees from horizontal below the second P, all on the right barrel 239 on Metal portion of fore piece S&S with crown above and crossed swords below Sauer trademark (man holding gun at his right side) G in the same script style as the G on the cartouche of the first gun

The gun is heavily engraved with a vine motif of factory engraving. The stock is heavily checkered and scored, with a cheek rest on the right hand side and a black horn scrolled grip. The hammers are engraved in a cat or panther head design.

The G is the mark for Gustav Adolph, since both guns were confiscated by U.S. occupying troops at the close of WWII. The previous owner confirmed that in 1944 or 1945 these guns were confiscated in southern Germany somewhere between Baden and Bohemia.

Through proof marks, that the date of manufacture was between 1891 and 1893, as indicated by the Imperial Crown above a capital “V”. A letter written to Sauer & Sohn, regretfully, was of little help, since there reply stated that all records for that period were lost during the communist occupation of Suhl at the close of WW II.
