This is a specimen of one of the best rimfire revolvers ever built, the Harrington & Richardson Sportsman, numbered model 999. The series began production in 1933, and we recently had a First Year Production specimen. This 999 was manufactured in 1984, from its AY serial number prefix. That was the next to last year of production for this fine revolver. Mechanism is on 19th Century Top Break Styling, with the breech lever conspicuously holding the windage adjustable flat matte blue steel rear sight. Barrel is 4 inch Vent Rib, with pinned on Low Patridge style steel front sight. Capacity is 9 rounds of .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle caliber ammunition. Construction is entirely blue steel, only with a .300 semi-target serrated spur white steel hammer to match the .312 blue steel smooth faced trigger. Grips are original factory walnut with brass H&R 1871 logo plates. Safety system is transfer bar against a floating firing pin. Weight empty is 31 ounces, balanced at the trigger. This 999 comes to us from one of our best young collectors here in West Tennessee. We quite possibly sold it new in 1984 or 1985; we stocked the 999s as long as they were in production. Surface detractions are minimal, only faint amounts of edge whitening at the muzzle and on the cylinder’s forward edges. Grips show minimal small scoured areas on their butt edges and on their shoulders. We rate this revolver as Excellent, 90 to 95 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically. Extractor’s rotation splines do not show any wear. The cylinder shows negligible rotation marking. Blast effect to the frame top strap above the barrel is negligible. This revolver has not fired many rounds; we estimate 200 or 300 at most, and certainly no CCI Stingers. Bore and cylinder chambers are bright, clean, and excellent. Cylinder times correctly in all nine positions on both single and double action, with 10 to 15 degrees hammer travel after timing in double action, and 35 degrees on single action. Double action trigger pull is stiff but consistent, and the single action pull gauges at 5 pounds with minimal felt creep. Lateral movement of the cylinder is negligible.
