Springfield Armory 1864/1866 Trapdoor 50-70 2nd Model Guns > Rifles > Antique (Pre-1899) Rifles - Ctg. Misc.
Description: Springfield Armory 1864/1866 Trapdoor 50-70. 2nd Model Allin Conversion. 36 inch barrel. Original Strap. Very good bore. I have 6 rounds of the original 50-70 cartriges. This gun is a great find for you military collectors. Open to reasonable offers. Gun is very rare. After Springfield got the contract from congress to build the 2nd Allin Conversion in 1866, popular support trended to continue with the breech loading conversion, but to change from 50-70 to 45-70. Meanwhile, the Army Dept and the congress was short on money, so they took all the 50-70 Allin conversion guns and in 1870 sold them all to France for the Franco Prussion War of 1870. Of all the trapdoors, the 2nd Model Allin Conversion 50-70 is one of the most rare guns of that era. Most were lost during the war and only a few remained in the U.S. The Cartouche is there, but hard to make out, but does contain the initials HSH, for H. S. Hill who was the inspector at the Armory at that time. Markings in the metal are crisp and clear: 1864 behind the hammer and 1866 on the front of the trapdoor, and the Springfield Armory Eagle in front of the hammer
