Make - Savage;

Model - 99A;

Operation - Lever-Action Rifle;

Caliber - .300 Savage;

Barrel - 22";

Finish - Bluing is all original and shows some minor age-related thinning in a couple of places, wood has been professionally re-finished;

Details - Used, but in great condition.

Iron sights, including folding rear sight. Brass bead on the front sight.

Weaver scope bases included.

Steel shell counter.

Stock has been professionally refinished including restoring a 3" hairline crack.

The barrel and receiver bluing is in very good condition. There are a couple of places on the receiver where the bluing is thinning but this is due to age, not abuse. There are a couple of small spots of very light, old rust, but it is not active and it is not deep. Very minor handling marks -- this rifle has been well cared for and never abused. See photos.

Case hardening on the lever is still bright and full of color, and the lever does not indicate a lot of use.

Bore is clean and bright, with strong rifling.

Sling swivel loops.

Metal butt-plate.

"The Savage 99 was preceded by the Savage 1895, which was the first hammer-less lever-action rifle produced. The hammer-less design is a substantial improvement, because the time lapse from trigger pull to primer ignition is shorter. This makes the rifle more accurate, because the rifleman's muscular tremors have less time to move the rifle off-aim. A hammer-less design is also less likely to jam in brush or clothing.

"The rotary magazine design allowed the rifle to be one of the first lever-action rifles to use spitzer-nosed bullets. Previous lever-action rifles used tubular magazines, which placed cartridges of ammunition end-to-end. In tube magazines, with spitzer-nosed bullets, the pointed tips of the ammunition would contact the primer of the cartridge in front of it, significantly increasing the chance of an accidental discharge within the magazine. Another new safety feature was that upon cocking the rifle, a small pin would protrude above the top of the receiver to indicate that the rifle was cocked and ready to fire."
