Description: This Colt Single Action Army Revolver was originally shipped to Hartley & Graham, New York City, on February 10, 1883, with 49 other guns. It is listed as .45 caliber, nickel with stocks and barrel length unlisted, so assumed walnut and 7.5”. It appears that it then went west. Most recently, it was sold at Cal Dyer’s Online Auction in May, 2019. The gun is mechanically sound with a very good bore which shows very superficial black powder frosting. The grips are numbered to the gun and assembly numbers match as well as serial numbers.

It was consigned by the grandson of Mathew T. Carlisle. The accompanying cartridge/money belt (F. A. Meanea, Cheyenne) and holster were sold with the Colt, and have been with it, and in the family as long as anyone can remember. Judging from the date of manufacture (1883), the gun was probably originally acquired by Mathew’s father, Stuart Carlisle, or his grandfather, George Carlisle.

This is truly a real pioneer, western Colt!

The Carlisle-Nelson Family (quote from Mathew's son)

My great-grandfather, George Stuart Carlisle (born Jan. 10, 1826, New York City, NY, died May 26, 1894, Wahoo, NE), and wife, Patience, born in 1832, (married 26 Dec 1848 in Bloomington, Monroe, Indiana), with four children, left Indiana in June, 1855, by covered wagon. They traveled twelve to sixteen miles per day, and stayed in taverns overnight. He paid expenses in gold. He bought farmland and timber near Woodburn, Iowa where they built their home. He was also a bookkeeper and went to Washington D.C. twice a year to work on books for a relative. They raised six boys and two girls.

When a drouth came he sold out and moved to Kansas, then later to Wahoo, Nebraska (founded 1870 – about 50 miles west of Omaha) and settled in District 70. The family belonged to the Covenanter Church, a Reformed Presbyterian Church. No instrument was allowed in the church and they sang only the Psalms.

Their oldest son, Stuart Hamilton Carlisle, my grandfather, with his wife, Margaret, moved to Wahoo in 1876. He was a blacksmith and cabinet maker. Their children, Mathew, my father; sisters, Elizabeth Zeilinger and Anita Bullock. Mathew was born in Walnut City, Iowa. He worked with his father in the blacksmith shop for years; later, for Saunders County. He married Hannah Nelson who was raised ten miles southwest of Wahoo. Their daughters were Gertrude, who taught school in Wahoo and married Richard Hull; Dorothy, a teacher, who married Edward J. Carlson. As Dad grew up, there were Indians around Wahoo, who often stopped at his home to ask for coffee or sugar; his mother always shared with them.

Mathew T. Carlisle 1874 – 1969

Mathew T. Carlisle, born May 6, 1874 in Walnut City, Appanoose County, Iowa – died May 21, 1969. He married Hannah C. Nelson Carlisle (June 22, 1884 – Sept. 26, 1951 (Sunrise Cemetery, Wahoo, Saunders County, Nebraska). We know he was a member of the City Council, Wahoo, Nebraska c. 1910.
