Ithaca $5000 Grade Single Trap- FANTASTIC, AS NEW, 1 OF 21 EVER MADE!
What a fabulous find! A stunning Ithaca $5000 Grade Single Barrel Trap (SBT) in the factory case in brand new condition. They made very few SBT in this very best grade of the Ithaca Knick. Any Ithaca student knows the “Sousa Grade”, the highest grade, most ought after of them all. Well, when the Sousa Grade was discontinued in 1938, its replacement, equal in decoration, was designated the “$1000 Grade”. As time passed and prices rose this gun eventually was called the “$5000 Grade” and eventually simply the “Dollar Grade”. So, the casual name for all of the models that replaced the Sousa is the “Dollar Grade” no matter the monetary designation. There were about 100 “Dollar guns” produced between 1938 and 1982, with the previous 9 Sousa’s in the same category. Darned few by any measure. This gun is in factory original condition.
The 32” barrel retains 100% blue, mirror bore, choked Full at .038 constriction, internal diameter of .730, minimum barrel wall thickness of 47 thousandths, no pits, scratches, dents, or dings, 2 ¾” chamber, tight rib, white front and mid bead, barrel tight on breech face and hinge, clear sharp lettering and engraving, as new.
The action retains 100% factory bold, case color, the profuse engraving is deep chiseled full coverage scroll with 8 raised gold bird inlays and six gold landscape inlays, for a total of 14, excellent screws, action tight with lever well right of center, crisp trigger at 3.5lbs. pull, trigger guard 100% blue and deeply engraved, all beautifully executed. The engraving is signed by Bill McGraw’s replacement, Bill Mains, as well as his protégé Jaqueline Favre. VERY ELEGANT!
The wood is highly figured walnut with a virtual flame of veins running through it. The finish is factory new, as is the elaborate checkering, with LOP of 14 ¾” to the end of the Ithaca Sunburst pad, 1 ½” drop at heel, 1 7/16” drop at comb, neutral cast, no splits, chips, cracks, or repairs, excellent wood to metal fit. The forearm has an elaborate ebony inlay in the tip, engraved forend lever, all in excellent shape.
