Here is Smith & Wesson's original Wonder Nine, the model 59. From this one’s A250000 range serial number prefix, it was manufactured in 1975, Fifth Year of Production. Type is locked breech, hammer fired, traditional double and single action semi automatic pistol. Construction is steel barrel, sights, hammer, trigger and internal parts combined with a lightweight alloy frame and alloy full length guide rod. Barrel is 4 inch white steel, marked 9mm; and with 5 groove right hand 1:18.75 rifling. Slide is blued steel, polished laterals and matte upper, with serrations forward of the safety lever, and with .928 width at the port. Note the full length steel guide rod and bushing that mates to barrel and rod. Sights are slide integral serrated ramp front and windage adjustable Lollipop style rear with black blade insert. Frame is lightweight alloy, with grip frame serrated fore, front strap, and aft, mainspring housing or back strap that has integral lanyard loop. Grips are original factory glossy polymer with logo impress and checkered surface lowers, 1.38 inches wide at the top screw. Trigger is .304 smooth faced steel, with matching .265 Serrated Spur Hammer. Magazine is original factory flat plate 14 round; the 59, however, will accept any 5900 magazine. Capacity is original 14+1, but Mec-Gar's 5917 Magazines will up that to 17+1 and still fit flush. Overall length is 7 1/2 inches from muzzle to grip frame strut, with a height of 5 1/2 inches from the top of the rear sight to the end of the magazine floor plate. Weight empty is 30 1/2 ounces, with center of gravity at the breech face. The Smith & Wesson 59, as always, is a good feeling, well balanced, accurate pistol. It also has a left side, right hand shooter, lever safety, as well as a firing pin safety and magazine safety. It will not fire single shot if the magazine is removed. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, 12 pound vicinity; and the single action two stage pull measures only 5 1/2 pounds with minimal felt creep. Finish is blued slide assembly with brushed lateral surfaces and matte uppers; and polished surface black anodized alloy frame. This 59 comes to us from duty with the Mishteret Y'Israel, the Israeli Civilian Police. It has markings, Made in USA / CAI Georgia VT., on the forward right side as required by US Law for re-import.Surface detractions are moderate to extensive:frame shows edge wear and moderate scours. Slide wear is moderate with freckling and toning. We rate this 59 as Good, 70 percent vicinity by our estimate; but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We estimate this pistol has been fired fewer than 1500 times for annual qualification, no rounds at all for a 59 Smith & Wesson.
