Description: Up for auction is an all-original 1942 Finnish M-39 in excellent condition. This particular rifle was made during the "Continuation War" (after the German invasion of Russia in 1941) and is a great example of Finnish old-world craftsmanship. As with all the M-39 produced during the war years (as far as I'm aware), this has a 2-piece stock that accepted the new barrel that the Finns fitted to the captured Russian M91/30's. But the rifles are so expertly put together that the splices in the stock are so finely finished that you have to look closely to find them. These Finnish M-39 rifles are, in my opinion, one of the finest rifles to come out of WW 2. Even though they are based on the Russian Mosin-Nagant, they are a far superior version. Most collectors consider them to be the ultimate evolution of the Mosin-Nagant. Personally, I've found them to be more accurate, more comfortable to shoot, and easier to handle than their Russian progenitors. And what's even nicer, they shoot the plentiful 7.62x54R ammo. (As a side note, you don't see these M-39's as much anymore, and certainly not in this condition--this one has a beautiful walnut finish without all the usual dings, hack marks, and gouges that usually accompany war-time surplus rifles. I believe it has been arsenal reworked as the handguard is not an exact fit. But the bore is excellent and the metal still has most of its bluing.) I believe the supply of good examples of these rifles is very nearly exhausted. Except for possibly some cracked stock ones, I doubt that there will be any more coming in to the country. If you don't have one in your collection, now is the time. They'll only get harder to find and more expensive as time goes on. And, don't confuse these with the beat-up examples of the Russian 91/30's that are all over the place. These are superb rifles and wonderful shooters (see pictures--and these aged eyeballs of mine don't do real good anymore with iron sights!.) No collection of military surplus rifles is complete without a sterling example of the Finnish M-39.
