Description: Some speculation and unintended misinformation is associated with this rifle. The historical and background information presented here follows interviews with Nick Makinson and Adone Pozzobon. Crafted over a 15-year period by N.J. Makinson & Son, this spectacular .600 Nitro Express is the only rifle of this caliber Makinson produced and one of approximately 30 which comprise their total output. It was created to show the extraordinary level of craftsmanship one might expect from a firm founded to produce firearms besting those from the storied houses of London. Serialed "600", it wears 26-inch barrels (tubes from Ferlach), each with a muzzle diameter of .865 inches. Tapered and scalloped, the front sight base transitions to a pedestal that secures a brass-beaded blade. A sling loop attachment has been fitted, yet a counterpart was never added to the toe line. A drift-adjustable express blade rides atop a massive quarter rib. The action bears a London proof, as it was acquired from the J.B. Phillipson Company. The pinless locks are from York & Walling. Other appointments include extended tangs, rolled guard, trap door grip cap and a blank oval near the toe. Features include ejectors, automatic safety and an articulated trigger. While the stock is graced with drop points, checkering with partially Mullered borders and a traditional scalloped cheek rest accented by a shadow line, it is the wood itself that staggers. Shot through with a heavy, winding figure dark to the point of being sinister, it maintains a brooding elegance over its full length. ENGRAVING: Requiring 1,100 hours until completion in 1999, the entirety was performed by Adone Pozzobon. Mr. Pozzobon crafted his own tools in order to produce this extraordinary level of detail. The trunks and tusks of each elephant are approximately .001 greater in relief than their heads and bodies to create depth. Shading was accomplished by approaching every element with the smallest tools, rather than with chemicals. The sky and grasses come alive when the rifle is tipped, even as the bulls remain constant in the foreground. Detail is such that it seems possible to discern blood pulsating through the veins in the bull's outstretched ears. The left lock features a grand old bull and an askari, possibly at the instant the leader suspects the presence of a hunter. The right lock showcases another pair, the greater bull with his head high – the precise moment a PH might hiss “Take him! Take him now!”. The underside presents a solitary old bull moving along a path, the background in staggering relief. Each scene is surrounded with bold floral and vine that continues over the full length of the quarter rib, opening lever and tangs, reappears on the front sight base and in wedges over the chambers, and again at full coverage over the forend furniture, safety and grip cap. Both “SAFE” and “600” are presented in gold, and the engraver’s signature shows on the lower tang. DIMENSIONS: Weight is 15.0 pounds, including a removable mercury reducer. Length-of-pull is 14.7 inches, drops are 1.5 and 2.1 inches, and cast off is approximately .30-inch. CONDITION: Bores are pristine. Barrel blue is about 95 percent with suggestions of thinning. The balance of the metal is approximately 98 percent with an occasional hint of tarnish. Wood is also approximately 98 percent. CASE: A fitted leather and oak case with canvas cover secures the rifle. It is appointed with a ebony rod, snaps, oiler, striker bottle and sling loop. A Holland & Holland label appears on the upper lid. The internal portion of the locking mechanism has been removed. Otherwise, it presents in approximately 98 percent. INCLUSIONS: Kynock five-pack with two 900-grain solids, a 900-grain soft and two later softs in Wenger-marked brass. Photos of the blanks and a 5.5-inch Makinson table card are present. The price is firm and layaway is available. Photos by request (include direct email address).
