Description: I received this pistol from my father during the late 90s. It was a gift to him from Heinrich Krieghoff, during the early 60s together with a 1939 Luger. From photographs, Krieghoff International verified that the pistol was made at the Krieghoff factory in Germany, has early Luftwaffe proof marks but because their records for the pre through post WWII period no longer exists they could be of no further help. This Luger was featured in the Sept. 2009, issue of the Natl. Automatic Pistol Collectors Assoc. magazine.

My father was one of the first to discover that Krieghoff contracted to deliver Lugers for the German Luftwaffe. With that, he amassed hundreds of them. When he visited Mr. Krieghoff, he was gifted with this Luger. Although fully functional as a firearm, he was told not to shoot it because of the weak characteristic found in the Dural frame. My father is listed as a contributor to Gibson's "The Krieghoff Parabellum" and should have written the book but was not sufficiently literate to have done so. In response to Gibson's conclusion that there were no 1939 Krieghoff Lugers, my father asked for and received one from Heinrich. Apparently, during 1939, a few were being made by factory workers for personal collections.

The number "809" on the back of the receiver does not appear to be repeated by number references anywhere on the pistol. These appear to be the only numbers on the pistol itself. There is no number on the front of the receiver. Rather than numbers on any part I could access, there are Krieghoff proof marks- the more traditional "bird" proofs and what Gibson describes as "The Original Proof" plus LwaA 1st Stage Early proofs in addition to what one would expect on this prototype- the Krieghoff 5 point star rejection mark. Each of the moving parts and small parts I have had a chance to look at have some sort of a Krieghoff proof mark- i.e. the bottom interior of the side plate, right side of trigger, a 5 pt. star on the inside of the hold open devise and inside the thumb safety. There is an "original" proof on the right side and bottom of the barrel, a LwaA 1st Stage Early on the bottom of the barrel, right side of frame and I believe the right side of receiver. The 5 point star also appears on the right side of slide and bottom of barrel.

This Luger qualifies as a C&R firearm.
