English Eprouvette/Powder Tester Guns > Pistols > Antique (Pre-1899) Pistols - Ctg. Misc.
Description: These Eprouvettes were used by gunsmiths to test the strength of different gunpowders. A fixed size charge would be fired into the barrel, and the strength measured by how far the calibration disc (see photo) rotated. Eprouvettes were unique to the 18thC (late 1700's); this was because by 1800 gunpowder manufacture was consistent enough to render them useless.

These are almost IMPOSSIBLE to find in any condition, and the Excellence of this example makes it an Extremely Scarce piece of Firearms History. The barrel, calibration disc and lock assembly are brass, the butt is made of Walnut, and the flintlock mechanism is of the "boxlock" style that was popular in the late 1700's.

Condition on this tester is Excellent. A very nice wooden stand comes with the tester, but is not antique; it was made to show off the beauty of this piece. Measurements are 4" tall x 6" long.
